A few weeks ago, my dad suggested that if there was a shoeper-villian of the shoe world, it would, of course, be called “Lex Shoether”, after Lex Luther. He’s right: and I think these Marc Jacobs sandals are true Lex Shoethers, because while the front is unoffensive, if uninspiring, the heel… oh, that heel! It looks likes something a little kid would put together on the craft table in a fit of boredom one day, doesn’t it? Visit the Marc Jacobs website and zoom in on the heel to see what I mean.
The fact is, however, that these are $840. Which is an awful lot more than I’d be prepared to pay for something that looks like the product of craft hour. If you DO like them, however, you have two choices:
a) Make your own version, out of a pair of old sandals, some sticky tape and the leftover tinsel from last Christmas.
b) Click here and hand over $840. The choice is yours.
I had to show you these shoes, not because I love them, but because they’re one of the more… unusual… pairs of shoes that’ve popped up on Net-a-Porter this month. The snake strap, the velvet footbed (not the most practical fabric for a sandal, really, and for some reason red velvet always makes me think of Christmas. The red and gold colour combination only increases that effect, but I guess the snake isn’t exactly something generally associated with Christmas…), the wooden heel: there’s a whole lot going on with these shoes, isn’t there? Do you like them, though? If you do, click here to buy them: but be prepared to pay £465 for them.
Marc Jacobs’ famous mouse flats are one of those great dividers of opinion in the shoe world. Some people think they’re too cute for words, while others find them too twee to be tolerated, and there doesn’t seem to be any in-between. Naturally, then, I’m wondering whether you’ll react any differently to the slipper version, which are currently selling at Net-a-Porter for £195, and which feature velvet uppers with a snuggly fleece lining.
Of course, if I ever decide to spend £195 on a pair of slippers, I hope one of you will be kind enough to take me aside and have a word with me, because that’s £195 I could have spent on real shoes right there. If you want to do it, though, these are from the Marc by Marc Jacobs line and you can click here and be my guest.
A classic Mary Jane, brought up to date with a silver upper, a double strap, and some twinkly little buttons. Add a chunky heel that gives the shoe a bit of a 60s feel, and you end up with a something that’s easy to wear, but also very easy on the eye.
Despite the rather “old fashioned” shape of these shoes, they’re actually very much in-fashion right now: the kitten heel, the ladylike vamp which is the perfect shape for some of the 50s-style skirts and generally “dressed up” styles that are around at the moment. In fact, take off the glitter and you could totally imagine them on the feet of someone like Jackie Kenedy, worn with a boxy little Chanel jacket and a tweed skirt. The glitter, however, can’t be ignored (and probably isn’t something Jackie O would’ve worn, let’s face it), and help turn these into serious party shoes: albeit very chic ones!
These are £355 and are exclusive to Selfridges - click here to buy them.
These shoes have a real “super-villain” feel to them, no?
I realise that as a Shoe Superhero, I’m morally obliged to make super-villains my mortal enemies, no questions asked, but I just can’t do it in this case. I probably wouldn’t wear these sandals (I have a feeling they’d look a little odd on an actual foot), but they make such a striking silhouette that I actually find myself quite charmed by them.
These gold wedges will be too shiny for some tastes, but I’m rather fond of a metallic wedge, particularly in the summer. Not only are wedges some of the most comfortable shoes you’ll ever walk in, the colour of these Marc Jacobs shoes will work with everything (or almost everything), and they’ll go easily from day to night, too. I’m picturing them worn with a print dress, a few gold bangles and a martini, ideally on a yacht in St Tropez or somewhere equally glamorous, but you could just as easily throw them on with a little black dress for an evening out. Double bows win Marc Jacobs double the Shoeper points for these ones, too!
