Matiko ‘Bette’ asymmetric pumps, $136
It’s been a couple of years now since Zara released their famous asymmetric pumps, but they remain one of the most sought-after shoe styles of recent years. Who can forget all of those eBay bidding wars, many of which ended with the shoes selling for many, many times the original retail price? Not me: I may even have participated in a few of them, although, thankfully, I didn’t end up paying over-the-odds to secure the precious shoes!
Of course, the Zara shoes weren’t original: they were themselves based on a Christian Louboutin design, and since their runaway success, there have been many more “inspired by” versions, including theses ones by Matiko, which are available at Shopbop for $136.

It’s easy to see why this particular style has been so popular over the past few years. With pointed toes very much back in vogue, this design adds a bit of a twist with the asymmetric sides, which create a really pleasing silhouette. Those curved sides are elegant and striking, while still remaining very easy to wear, and the toes make these shoes as good from above as they do from the side. Overall, they have a very “grown up” feel to them, which would make them a good office shoe, which will work just as well when you’re heading out for drinks afterwards.
Inspired by the simplicity of the shape, I’ve chosen to style these with a basic pair of black cropped trousers, a bright pink knit, and this gorgeous Ted Baker trench, which brings the winter florals trend to your outerwear, but in a subtle enough way to keep the overall look timeless and classic: just like the shoes, in other words…
Anyone who doesn’t remember the Great Zara Asymetric Shoe Debacle of 2012 doesn’t belong here 🙂
