Shoeper Shoe Challenge # 37: A Woman’s Right to Shoes

What: New Look gold peep toes
When: Saturday, July 17th, 2010
Where: Usual Saturday dinner with my parents
With: Khaki pants (La Redoute); striped tank (Forever 21), jersey blazer (New Look kids department)

My favourite episode of Sex and the City is called A Woman’s Right to Shoes. If you’re a SATC fan, you probably know the one I mean: it’s the one where Carrie’s Manolo Blahnik’s are stolen at a baby shower, and she’s forced to spend the rest of the episode trying to justify her choice to spend her money on designer shoes, rather than on something “important”.

I love this episode for lots of reasons, but my favourite moment comes right at the very end, when Carrie’s Manolos are replaced, and she immediately puts them on and goes strutting down the street wearing a pair of sparkly silver stilettos… with what looks like whatever clothes she happened to throw on that morning.

This is why I love shoes. I love the fact that even the most extravagant looking footwear can be worn with an old pair of jeans, and not look too out of place (as opposed to even the plainest of skirts and dresses, which, if worn in my town, will cause people to look at you funny and ask where the party is, or if you have an interview).

These shoes aren’t designer (in fact, I bought them in New Look, about three years ago) and they’re not even particularly extravagant, buy hey: you don’t have to be Carrie Bradshaw to know all about a woman’s right to shoes…

“Hi! I’m hanging out here because I am just that cool. Not.”

“The hell? What’s all this mean, then?”

“I’ll just pretend I know what I’m doing here. I’ll also pretend this wasn’t the only shot that actually shows the shoes from the side, without totally cutting them out of the picture completely, and making me look like a foot-less freak…”

“La la la…”

“Am I done here? Good. Let’s go get some wine…”

  • Lovely outfit, I love the casual look with cute heels. Also the background is beautiful, that is some fun and colourful graffiti. πŸ™‚

    • Thank you! Our town is full of graffiti like that – this was literally just around the corner from my house, but I’ve been discovering loads more of it this week in various places around town. I really like it πŸ™‚

  • I have a friend who’s part of the whole barefoot movement, he keeps telling me that it’s better for your health and happiness and connection with the earth. Seemingly shoes are bad for the feet, the posture, and every part of your body.
“Yes,” I always say to him, “But they’re sooo pretty!”

  • I love that episode!! Especially how she is getting married to herself at the end perfect! Nice hair btw (reminds me I HAVE to go to the hairdresser – mine looks like crap..)
