J Crew Collection black and navy pumps, £300

There are quite a few shoes out there that look much better on a foot than they look in the product shot, but I think the opposite might be true of these J Crew suede and satin pumps: I loved them when I first came across them at Net-a-Porter, but I loved them a little less when I saw what they actually looked like on.

I think the very long, pointed toe is probably the main reason for this. As regular readers know, I’m a huge fan of pointed toes on shoes, but they have to be relatively short ones, otherwise the shoes look dated, and the feet wearing them look twice as long as they are.

Toes aside, though, these are gorgeous shoes, with the ribbon-ties being my favourite feature. (The caged heel comes a close second.) I also really like the colourway: navy and black is one of those combinations I grew up believing you should always avoid, but these days, that rule has fallen by the wayside, and I actually think the two colours can look very chic together, if done right.

I’ve featured a lot of party dresses lately, so although I’d definitely class these as dress shoes, I’ve chosen to style them with a pair of trousers today, instead. The trousers in question are Boden’s ‘Lydia’ trousers, and I really wanted these in green, but they seem to have sold out in my size already – sob! This blue version is also very pretty, however, and the lace overlay makes them much more special than would otherwise be the case.

The sweater, meanwhile, is also by Boden, and has also started to sell out in some colours, so if you love it as much as I do, you probably don’t want to wait too long before buying one!
