Some people seem to be born stylish: no matter what they wear, they always look good in it.
The rest of us, meanwhile? Some days it feels like we could could have a wardrobe crammed with amazing clothes, and STILL look sloppy in them.
Why is that? How do some people always manage to look stylish, while others just… don’t? Here are five style secrets that will keep you looking good, whatever you’re wearing…
PAY ATTENTION TO FIT AND FABRIC
Those effortlessly stylish people don’t necessarily have better taste than you: they just pay more attention to finding clothes that fit, flatter, and look high quality – even if they came from the bargain bin in Primark.
Never buy anything that doesn’t fit you perfectly – or, if you do, have it tailored. It’ll cost more, but it’ll be worth it.
DON’T BE A SLAVE TO FASHION
Following fashion can be a lot of fun, but the truly stylish never adopt a trend that doesn’t suit them. It might be the cutting edge of fashion, but that doesn’t mean you HAVE to wear it: it’s totally fine to skip the trends that don’t work for you, and only wear the ones that DO. (Or, better still, ignore trends altogether, and wear the clothes that make you feel good…)
NEVER SUFFER FOR STYLE
You’ll often hear people say you have to suffer for fashion – normally in relation to perilously high heels, and similar styles. Ignore these people: the truly stylish know that clothes should never make you feel uncomfortable, because if you feel uncomfortable, you’ll look uncomfortable, too. There’s nothing stylish about a woman tottering along in shoes she obviously can’t walk in: that doesn’t mean you have to skip the stilettos altogether (heaven forbid!), it just means you have to find ones that are comfortable. They’re out there, I promise…
LOOK AFTER YOUR CLOTHES
You could follow all of the guidelines above, but if your clothes are dirty, or in need of mending, you’ll STILL look less-than-stylish. Invest a little time and effort in looking after your clothes and shoes, and you’ll instantly look better.
DON’T TRY TO SHOP YOUR WAY OUT OF A STYLE RUT
If you’re feeling down about your appearance, it can be tempting to go for the quick fix by going on a shopping binge and trying to spend your way out of that rut. Unfortunately, this is a bit like going grocery shopping when you’re starving: you might end up with a few things you like, but you’ll be more likely to end up with an empty wallet and a closet full of clothes that STILL don’t work for you. Instead, take the time assess WHY it is that you’re unhappy with your current wardrobe, and always remember: you can’t buy style.
