Gianvito Rossi red sandals with plexiglass heel, £710

Is there anything quite like the colour red when it comes to creating a show-stopping pair of shoes? I don’t think so. Other colours can work almost as well, and can occasionally manage to be equally effective, but if it’s show-stopping you’re after, red is (usually) the way to go.

These Gianvito Rossi sandals don’t just have a stand-out colour, however – they have a stand-out heel, too. Whether the twisted perspex that’s propping the shoes up stands out in a good way or a bad one is, of course, another question altogether. I liked it at first glance –  it looked unusual enough to be fun, without veering too far into “novelty heel” territory – but the more I look at it, the less convinced I am by it. I think my main issue isn’t the perspex (I actually think a clear heel can be really effective, creating that “walking on air” illusion), but the placement of the heel: it’s set in from the back of the shoe, which makes it look a little bit “stuck on”, if that makes sense?

In conclusion? I think these are nice shoes, but probably not £710 worth of “nice”. For those of you who disagree, however, here’s one way to wear them:

outfit featuring blue jeans and polka dot shirt

shirt / jeans / smartphone case / nail polish

This is a fairly dressed-up shoe, so my initial inclination was to put it with an equally dressed-up outfit. I really love the look of bright red shoes with blue jeans, however, and I’m also a fan of the concept of getting the maximum use out of your purchases, by taking a pair of dress sandals, and wearing them with a much more casual outfit, hence the ‘jeans and shirt’ look here. Well, if you’re going to pay that much for shoes, you may as well wear them, right?
