Topshop ‘Carrie’ black patent knee high boots, £130

It’s amazing how much difference patent leather can make to a shoe – or boot in this case. If they were matte leather I probably wouldn’t have given these boots a second thought, for instance, but this shiny patent upper really makes them stand out, and also smartens them up considerably. I have a pair of black patent knee boots from Dune, and I really like the way they instantly dress up even a very basic outfit: these ones would have the same effect, and if you have enough pairs of black boots already (What am I saying? Of COURSE you don’t have enough pairs of black boots!), they also come in a brown patent leather, which isn’t something you see too often.

Here are some other items I’m currently loving from Topshop:

stripe bodycon dress

This dress could actually work pretty well with the boots, although that’s not why I picked it. I picked it purely because it’s one of those staple items I never get tired of: simple, classic and easy to wear – it doesn’t get much better than that, does it?

I also like this tartan mini skirt:

This is much shorter than I’d wear myself, but if you can pull off the length I think it would look fabulous with a chunky roll neck and opaque tights for a look that will be cosy, but still pulled together.

Finally, you can’t go wrong with a camel coat:

This is by Topshop Boutique, and at £225 it’s a bit pricier than Topshop’s main line clothing, but it’s also the kind of thing you’d get years and years worth of wear out of, and which will look effortlessly stylish, no matter what you wear it with, so it could be considered something of an investment buy. That’s how I like to justify these things, anyway…
