Yves Saint Laurent ‘Palais’ blue suede platform shoes

ysl blue suede platform shoes Yves Saint Laurent Palais blue suede platform shoesThat exaggerated platform sole isn’t going anywhere this winter – or not if YSL has anything to do with it, anyway.

Actually, while these ‘Palais’ pumps are one of the more dramatic looking platforms I’ve seen in a while (and much of that is because of the colour, rather than the shape), there’s still an ongoing trend for brightly coloured suede pumps at the moment, and many of the less expensive brands have been bringing out their own versions of this style of shoe. The angled platform and curved heel of the ‘Palais’ pump are what sets it apart from the rest, giving it that wonderful silhouette, but if you don’t want to spend £505, worry not: there are plenty of alternatives out there at rather more affordable prices.

If you DO want to spend £505, on the other hand, head over to Net-a-Porter!

Yves Saint Laurent Palais Suede Fur-Trim Pumps

    Uh-huh.

I’m not even sure to start with these. I mean, does it look to anyone else like some poor, unfortunate be-furred creature got caught between the heel and the upper at some point during the making of these shoes? And got squashed? Because that’s pretty much all I can think of when I look at them. That and “I wonder how long it would take me to get the scissors out and trim off the fur?”

The fur, of course, is the whole point of Yves Saint Laurent’s ‘Palais’ pumps (it’s goat fur, just in case you’re wondering), which are $880 at Saks. These would be a big “NO” for me, but what do you think of them?

Not only do these shoes have a flower on the ankle strap, they also have a branch for a heel, making them look like some kind of strange organic growth, rather than a man-made shoe. This is a look we’ve been seeing a fair bit of in shoe design over the past couple of seasons, and I’m still on the fence about it. On the one hand, I like the fact that shoes like this are that little bit unusual, but on the other hand, I don’t actually think the branch-effect is particularly pleasing to look at. What do you think?

What I do love about these shoes is the colour: they’re also available in tan, but this vibrant red is the one that would win my heart. These are $895 at Saks.

YSL’s Tribute sandals have become something of a modern classic, and I don’t think it’s too hard to see why. This purple version of the style has just become available at Net-a-Porter, although at the not-exactly-wallet-friendly price of £685. I think the colour is absolutely glorious, the price less so; luckily, though, we’ve seen lots of high street versions of this shoe already, so hopefully it won’t be too long before a more affordable interpretation pops up somewhere!

The Shoes from the Shows: Yves Saint Laurent Spring Summer 2010

yves saint laurenet shoes The Shoes from the Shows: Yves Saint Laurent Spring Summer 2010

Moving away from the giant platforms they’ve focused on for the past couple of seasons, Yves Saint Laurent’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection is a little more feminine, being chock-full of flowers. They’re flowers with a difference, though, because these ones come complete with branches and thorns: the shoes on the left of the picture have a “branch2 for a heel, and the ones in the middle look like they’re covered in thorns. Even the red shoes on the right have something of a “wilting rose” look about them!

I guess it makes a change from all of the platforms, but what do you think of these?

Celebrity Shoes: Lady Gaga in Yves Saint Laurent’s Imperiale pumps

LFI GAGA029 1 Celebrity Shoes: Lady Gaga in Yves Saint Laurents Imperiale pumps

Well here’s a first: Lady Gaga wearing an outfit I’d actually wear myself! I should probably be more concerned about this than I actually am, but the truth is, I love that dress! The shoes… well, they’re Yves Saint Laurent’s Imperiale pumps, and they’re being touted as one of the “It” shoes of the season. For some reason, they just don’t really do it for me: I much prefer the Tribute platform, which doesn’t go all the way to the heel, like this one does. They have a bit of a front-heavy look to them, but they are very stylised and dramatic, which is probably why they appealed to Lady Gaga! Do they appeal to you, though?

Yeah, that’s what I thought too. By which I mean: “I have absolutely no idea WHAT to think about these”. But I think the huge platform trend should maybe come to an end. Maybe soon.

Yves Saint Laurent’s cage heels in the Net-a-Porter sale

ysl cage heels Yves Saint Laurents cage heels in the Net a Porter saleThe Net-a-Porter sale started while I was gone (probably a good thing, under the circumstances), and there were further reductions today, making it a happy hunting ground for us shoe lovers.

One of the more surprising reductions for me was the famous Yves Saint Laurent cage heels. I didn’t expect to see these on sale – not because I love them, but purely because they’ve become so instantly recognisable, and have been written about so much now, that I’d have assumed they’d have sold out long ago.

Obviously not, though, because not only are they still available, they’re also reduced to £328 in the sale: maybe a sign that the cage look just wasn’t as popular as the press coverage would lead us to think it was?

Personally, I didn’t see what the fuss was when these first came out, but they have really grown on me, and now that I’ve had the opportunity to actually see people wear them, I find myself liking them a whole lot more. Not enough to pay £328 for them, mind you, but it’s a big reduction on the original £820, so if you do love them, now could be your chance to own a pair.
