The title of this post didn’t really prepare you for what was inside, did it? I mean, yeah, sure, these ARE platform wedges. But WHAT platform wedges they are!
Now, we could talk about the suede t-bar or the leather bootie. We could do that. But really, there’s not much point when that WEDGE is in the picture, is there? It’s practically jumping up and down, waving its hands (If wedges HAD hands, of course…) in the air and yelling “Look at me! Look at me!”
We’re looking, but are we liking, that is the question? Well, I am. Liking looking, I mean. Would I like to own them or wear them? Not so much. The gold/silver is a bit too much to allow it to merge seamlessly into my wardrobe, but I do appreciate the design of these: the concertina-style wedge is one of those features that make we want to reach out and touch it… or to just put it on display.
What do you think? These are $995 for the shoes and $1095 for the boots: click here to buy them.
These Yves Saint Laurent wedges jumped out at me from the Net-a-Porter website yesterday, in a way that a plain black wedge doesn’t normally have the power to do. That’s probably because these are anything but plain black wedges, of course: they’re black, sure, but the gold trim and layered suede uppers make them worthy of a second look:
Despite the peep toe, these have a very Autumnal feel for me, possibly because the cut-out suede is vaguely leaf-shaped. I don’t normally wear peep toes with tights, but I think these shoes could lend themselves to that look: what do you think?
These shoes have their backs to us, not because they’ve done something wrong and been sent to stand in the corner, but because the heels are the most interesting thing about them. Don’t believe me? Oh, OK, here’s the side view:
See? They’re not bad shoes, but the white uppers are a bit… well, bland, really. The purple heel and sole, however, are a different matter, and while I wouldn’t buy them myself – and certainly not for £539 – they did make me stop and look, and if a shoe has the power to make me stop in my tracks, well, that’s normally enough to make me want to show you it.
These have woven heels, just like almost every other pair of shoes I seem to find right now, which have been dyed a deep, vibrant purple. And that’s about all I have to say about them. I’m off to look at those Miss KGs again now: you, meanwhile, can click here if you want to have a better look at these.
Well, here’s something I don’t think I’ve seen done before (although I’m getting pretty forgetful in my old age, so you never know…): a shoe with what looks like a deliberately broken wedge. It reminds me a little bit of the focal migraines I get every now and again, a kind of slightly-distorted reality. It is but a shoe with a strange heel, though, and I want to know what everyone thinks of it: do you love this change from the norm, or do you just want to find it a cobbler, quick?
These are by Yves Saint Laurent: click here to buy them.
If you’re a shoe lover (and I can’t think of another reason you’d be visiting this website), you’re probably already familiar with these shoes: they’re Yves Saint Laurent’s classic ‘Tribtoo’ platform pumps, and they’ve been available in more colours than I can count.
These ones are my favourite, though.
Because these ones are green.
Need I say more?
(Carvela actually released a shoe almost identical to this a couple of years ago, although it had a sprinkling of crystals on the heel. It was called “Astroid’, and it’s one of the biggest regrets of my shoe-buying life that I didn’t buy a pair when I had the opportunity. I still think of them every now and then – they were even nicer than these are!)
It would’ve been wrong of me not to show you the latest version of YSL’s famous Tribute sandal. After all, shoes like these demand attention, and I’m pretty sure that’s what they’re going to get: Bergdorf Goodman describe them as “assertive” and, well, that’s certainly one way of putting it, isn’t it?
With purple uppers and stingray-covered platform and heel, they’re loud, exotic and… expensive. These will set you back $995 – click here to buy them.
This is a very different version of Yves Saint Laurent’s ‘Palais’ pumps from the last ones I showed you, which had blue suede uppers and slender stiletto heels. These, by contrast, are all about the chunkiness: the heel is so wide it’s almost a wedge, and these have a very retro feel to them, like something from the late 60s or early 70s. The uppers also have an elasticated area on the vamp, plus two straps to hold them on.
Judging by the images on the Net-a-Porter product page, I think these look better on than they do on their own – and even more like a pair of chunky wedges – but I still don’t think I could be persuaded to buy them, even if they were on a serious discount. As it is, these will set you back £720. What do you think of them?
That exaggerated platform sole isn’t going anywhere this winter – or not if YSL has anything to do with it, anyway.
Actually, while these ‘Palais’ pumps are one of the more dramatic looking platforms I’ve seen in a while (and much of that is because of the colour, rather than the shape), there’s still an ongoing trend for brightly coloured suede pumps at the moment, and many of the less expensive brands have been bringing out their own versions of this style of shoe. The angled platform and curved heel of the ‘Palais’ pump are what sets it apart from the rest, giving it that wonderful silhouette, but if you don’t want to spend £505, worry not: there are plenty of alternatives out there at rather more affordable prices.
If you DO want to spend £505, on the other hand, head over to Net-a-Porter!
