Giambattista Valli red velvet pumps with crystals, £645

I thought you might appreciate a giant, shoe-shaped dose of old-fashioned glamour to brighten up your Tuesday morning, so here it is, in the shape of these red velvet pumps by Giambattista Valli.

I’m going to try to overlook the price tag – and the fact that there are only a couple of sizes still available – and think instead about the entirely imaginary event I would wear these to, and the equally fictional outfit I’d wear with them. Well, what better way – other than actual shoe shopping – to spend a dull winter’s day?

  2. Shoe Kryptonite: Louis Vuitton velvet ‘Beauty’ bow pumps

I’m no big fan of Louis Vuitton – in fact, I’m not even a little fan of Louis Vuitton, but I am a huge fan of these shoes, which I’ve been smitten with since they appeared on the runway earlier this year. The Winter ad campaign sealed the deal for me: these look much better on a foot than they do in this product shot, and they’re the perfect finishing touch for the “ladylike” look that’s going to be so popular this season (and which I wholeheartedly approve of).

These also tap into this winter’s velvet trend, topping the velvet uppers with a flat bow, and finishing it off with a Swarovski crystal covered heel. When the words “Vuitton” and “Swarovski” appear in the same product description, however, it’s a big clue that the price is going to have you reaching for the smelling salts: these are $1,420, and they’re not available online, so you’ll have to search them down in a Louis Vuitton store if you want to buy them.

  3. Carvela red velvet ‘Grow’ pumps

Something about these shoes says “Christmas” to me. I’m not sure if it’s the bright red colour, the wintry velvet uppers or the sparkly bow on the front, but if ever there was a shoe to wear to the Christmas party, this would be it. And I’m really starting to depress myself by talking about Christmas parties, now, so I’ll move on…

These are ‘Grow’ by Carvela, they’re also available in black, and for me, one of their best features is the chunky heel, which makes a pleasant change from the ever-present stiletto, while still being high enough to keep the likes of me happy. It looks like it would be fairly comfortable to walk on, too, and what you can’t really see from the image above is that the heel is patent, creating a nice contrast with the velvet:

Love it. These are £150 at Kurt Geiger.

  4. Rupert Sanderson Muscadet velvet pumps

Oh, that curvy silhouette! It has to be one of my favourite shoe shapes ever, and these Muscadet pumps by Rupert Sanderson use it to perfection.

The uppers on these are velvet, which gives them a very sumptuous feel, while the knotted fronts give a nice twist (literally) to a classic style:

Gorgeous. Now, who wants to pay £490 for them? Anyone? Head over to Net-a-Porter if you do!

  5. Brian Atwood velvet and leather peep toe court shoes

Velvet isn’t normally a fabric I’m drawn to on shoes, but these Brian Atwood peep toes have won me over. The velvet uppers are covered with patent leather spots, which look like droplets of oil or water on the black uppers, and create a really interesting effect. There’s also a tear-shaped cut-out on the vamp, which continues the theme, and helps make these so much more special than an ordinary pair of black peep toes.

Sadly, they’re much more expensive, too: they cost £476, and you can buy them at Colette.
