Brian Atwood ‘Bronski’ studded suede thigh boots

How do you make a plain pair of black thigh-high boots stand out?

Well, to be honest, I don’t think you really need to try to make them stand out: they have a way of doing that all by themselves. If you really want to give them that little something extra, though, this would be the way to do it:

I couldn’t love them any more if I tried, because when I looked at the smaller photo, I thought they were crystals, and I was a bit “meh”, about the idea. Spikes, though? Spikes are sometimes the way to a Shoeper heart, and this would appear to be one of those times.

They’re not the way to a Shoeper Wallet, unfortunately, at £1285, but if that sounds fine to you, click here to buy a pair!

Stuart Weitzman red ‘Hiho’ thigh high boots

red suede thigh high boots1 Stuart Weitzman red Hiho thigh high boots If you’ve been following the progress of my Shoe Challenge, you’ll already know that I love thigh high boots, and I love any kind of red footwear. It would be safe to assume, then, that a pair of bright red thigh high boots would check all the right boxes for me, and you’d be totally right to make that assumption: well, don’t these look like exactly the kind of boots a shoe superhero would wear?

In real life, I’m not sure I’d be able to pull these off. I do know I’d love to have the opportunity to find out, though, and if you would too, you can click here to buy these for $522.

New Shoes! Zara tan leather thigh-high boots

Well, as predicted, I wasn’t able to resist those Zara boots I wrote about last week. Actually, to be perfectly honest, I almost wasn’t able to resist quite a few pairs of boots in Zara, but the expression on Shoeperman’s face was enough to convince me that it might be prudent to wait until next pay day before I go back for more. I think he may also have blocked the Zara website from my computer, which wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing.

Speaking of Shoeperman, thanks go to him for making a contribution towards this purchase. I’m planning to wear them with a camel coat and chocolate coloured dress this Autumn: first, though, I gave to actually buy those things. (Oh, and needless to say, I’m also planning to wear them with a longer skirt: this one was purely for the purpose of illustration!)

These have technically already been worn, because the shoes I was wearing that day, which had previously always been perfectly comfortable, decided it was time to start torturing my feet: by the time I got to Zara I was in so much pain I ended up buying a pair of socks so I could put these on right away. I wore them for the rest of the day, and they were very comfortable, although I did feel pretty stupid walking around in thigh-high boots on such a gorgeous day. As you all know, though, the rules of the Shoe Challenge are “photos or it didn’t happen”, so that one doesn’t really count…

Stuart Weitzman’s Rockstar thigh-high boots

I’d say more about this, but I’m sitting here imagining what it would be like to spend $10,000 on one pair of boots, and to be honest, it’s making me feel a little shaky. If you want to go ahead and do, it, however, the New York city Saks is the only place you’ll be able to find these. You’ll find me, meanwhile, lying down in a darkened room.

Topshop ‘Barley’ leather thigh-high boots

Well, we’ve reached that time of year again: the time of year when Topshop starts releasing lots of covetable, thigh-high boots, which sell-out almost immediately, and which I am guaranteed to want. Even if I already have a near-identical pair of boots, I will still want them. I, you see, love thigh-high boots. I know a lot of people find them difficult, or even “trashy” (the words “Julia Roberts” and “Pretty Women” almost always come up in any discussion of this style), but I still love them, and I think the key to making them work, without looking like you’re the one doing the work, if you catch my drift (working girl? No? Oh, never mind), is to pair them with skirts and dresses that aren’t too long – knee-length or thereabouts is perfect – and aren’t too tight. That way the boots will help keep you warm all winter, and all onlookers will see will be the merest suggestion of thigh-high boot, without you looking like a hooker.

Have I convinced you, yet? I actually don’t even expect to convince all of you, because these definitely aren’t for everyone, but if they are for you, they’re called ‘Barley’ and they’re £120 at Topshop.

Emilio Pucci cream leather thigh high boots

I know I probably shouldn’t, but I have a feeling that if I were to see these boots in real life, I’d probably run over and start stroking them or something. Would I wear them? Well, probably not: cream coloured leather and the Scottish winter are a match made in hell, basically, so they’re not the most practical footwear I can think of. They’re the first pair of cream thigh highs I’ve seen, though – every other pair so far has been black/grey/brown, so here they are – and for a mere £1,230, they can be yours.

As The Fashion Police have already noted, I think the photo above represents one of the only ways to wear these boots: when you’re Kylie Minogue and on stage. Doesn’t she look fantastic?

I’ve looked as these boots many, many times now (they’re also available in ankle-high version) and have wondered what they’d look like on, so now here’s the answer. Definitely not something I’d go for myself, but as part of a stage costume, I think they work pretty well. One more short of Kylie, in a different – and more wearable – pair of thigh-high Louboutins under the jump…
