Roger Vivier leather and raffia Limelight court shoes

roger vivier leather and rafia shoes Roger Vivier leather and raffia Limelight court shoes

Raffia is big this season. No it isn’t, I just made that up. I have spotted a few shoes with this distinctive (and, I would imagine, fairly fragile) upper, the latest being these Roger Vivier court shoes. Rather than going for the traditional summery sandal, to which raffia lends itself rather well, these are actually in the classic Roger Vivier style, right down to the buckle on the front. It’s a slightly odd pairing on paper, but I think it works rather well: just not well enough to make me want to spend £659 on shoes I’d be sure to ruin on their first outing.

I’m always a little wary of shoes with raffia uppers. I worry that they’d be delicate, and that I’d ruin them within minutes of putting them on, which, knowing me, is always a distinct possibility. Nevertheless, I like the look of these Mango peep toes, which look like the kind of thing you’d wear on a cruise, maybe, or, you know, somewhere very clean, where you wouldn’t have to worry about keeping the dirt off them.

Raffia and patent isn’t a mixture that sounds like it should work to me, but then again, I’m not generally all that keen on raffia shoes no matter what they’re paired with, so that’s possibly just my own bias talking.  Despite that, however, I actually really like these Olivia Morris peep toes, which mix a raffia heel with a black patent toe and strap.

It’s the over-sized buckle that really sets these shoes apart, and the two-tone uppers help, too. They’re just a little bit out of place at this time of year, but could be worth tucking away for a summer party. Get them at The Outnet, where they’re £192.50.

Azzedine Alaia python and shell wedge shoes

You can always rely on Azzedine Alaia to come up with something a little bit different, and these raffia and wedge shoes definitely fall into that category, although to me they look more like some kind of ancient artefact (from the, er, Rafia Age) than actually footwear. They’re also £ 1339.00, which is… a lot. Yes, a lot.

From this you’ll have gathered that I’m not going to be saving up my pennies to buy a pair of these. I think they’ll probably fall into the “love it or hate it” category (or maybe just the “hate it” category, who knows?). If you’re feeling the raffia love, though, you can buy these here.
