Heroes or Villains: Alexander McQueen’s ‘Pelle’ ankle boots

    by

alexander mcqueen boots Heroes or Villains: Alexander McQueens Pelle ankle bootsZappos describe these as “sandals” which, well, is clearly a big fat lie, isn’t it? An open toe does not a sandal make, and the sooner the shoe world realises that, and we can all get back to wearing season-appropriate footwear, the better.

These are boots. Peep toe boots. Alexander McQueen peep toe boots. And with those pointed, studded ankles, they look a bit cartoon villain-esque, no?

But with those bits fastened down:mcqueen boots Heroes or Villains: Alexander McQueens Pelle ankle boots

    Not so much. Hmmmm.

Of course, there is always that peep toe to contend with, and as much as I love peep toes in general, I tend to think that a boot is the last place they belong. I do quite like this though:

I particularly like the way the skull looks totally shocked, as if it’s thinking, “By God, I appear to have been attached to a pair of peep toe boots! Whatever next?”

What do you think of them, folks? Love? Hate? Indifferent?

If it’s love, they’re $1,159, and you can buy them here.

Nicole Brundage bow strap peep toe pumps

nicole brundage heels Nicole Brundage bow strap peep toe pumpsDesigners have been doing all kinds of interesting things with heels recently, and these Nicole Brundage peep toes fit right into that trend. They also remind me of a teapot for some reason, but maybe that’s just me.

That curved heel is obviously the stand-out detail of these shoes, but naturally, I think the bow strap deserves some attention, too:

From the front, they’re sweet, and fairly demure, so it’s only when you see the side/back view that you get the full, whimsical impact of these shoes. They’re one of three different Nicole Brundage styles currently on sale at Luisa Viaroma, and all featuring that distinctive heel - take a look at the others under the jump…

Laurence Dacade peep toe patent courts with wings on the heel

laurence dacade Laurence Dacade peep toe patent courts with wings on the heelI think these are the prettiest of all the wing-heeled shoes I’ve shown you recently. Less cartoonish than some of the other styles (not that there’s anything wrong with being cartoonish, you understand. Ahem.), they’re just lovely and unusual, but not so unusual that you’ll have problems working out to wear with them. In fact, the pale pink/nude uppers will go with more or less everything, making these a great pair of shoes for a special occasion, because they should work with even the most troublesome of dress colours.  Lovely.

Navy and white patent peep toe shoes from River Island

river island peep toes Navy and white patent peep toe shoes from River IslandThe “love this” comment attached to these shoes was actually added by River Island, not by me, but I’m not about to disagree with it, because I? Love these.

They actually appeared on the River Island website a few weeks ago, and didn’t really manage to catch my attention, but I saw them in person while I was out shoe shopping this weekend, and it was lust at first sight. I’ve already admitting to loving the nautical trend a little more than is really rational, so these, with their navy and white mix, plus the little bit of red trim you can just see in the picture, were probably always going to appeal to me. It took a huge amount of self-control for me to not just buy them instantly, but if you see no reason to control yourself, they’re £59.99 and you can buy them here.

Shoe Kryptonite: Nicholas Kirkwood platform peep toe shoes

nicholas kirkwood platform Shoe Kryptonite: Nicholas Kirkwood platform peep toe shoes

I’ve already nominated Christian Louboutin as the King of Shoes, but if that’s the case, then I think British designer Nicholas Kirkwood must be the Prince.

Kirkwood’s designs are a little more unconventional than Louboutin’s, and that, of course, means that they don’t always appeal to everyone, but I think these platform peep toes are true Shoe Kryptonite: i.e. they make my resolve (and my bank account) disappear on contact with them.

That very defined platform sole is a Nicholas Kirkwood trademark, and it’s what makes these shoes so special, although the gold stiletto doesn’t hurt either. Sadly for me, but perhaps fortunately for the aforementioned bank balance, these don’t come cheap, however: they’re £420 at Browns.

Confusing Shoes: Alessandro Dell’Aqua cutaway long boots

peep toe boots Confusing Shoes: Alessandro Dell’Aqua cutaway long boots

Every Superhero needs a good pair of boots, but like my friends at The Fashion Police, I have to admit that the current trend for boots with peep toes just leaves me cold. Literally. I mean, my toes would be cold in them, wouldn’t they? But here’s the thing: my legs would be warm. All the way up to my knees, in fact. Now, I don’t know about the rest of you, but I rarely find myself thinking, “Goodness, my legs are freezing, but my toes are so warm! If only there was a boot out there that could cater to those two conflicting needs!”

Strangely, though, the boots that cater to those needs DO exist, and these Alessandro Dell’Aqua cutaway long boots are just one example of them. From a distance, they look like your average pair of high heeled knee boots, and nothing wrong with that. Take a closer look, though, and:

boot peep toe Confusing Shoes: Alessandro Dell’Aqua cutaway long boots

Yeah.  Now we have ourselves a completely different boot. And while I wouldn’t quite spear these with my stiletto and throw them into space, the way I would a pair of Crocs, say, I wouldn’t give them space in the Shoeper Shoe Closet either. Would you?

Shoe Deja Vu: Topshop’s ‘Samba’ and Boohoo’s ‘Lorrie’ shoes

toshop boohoo knockoffs Shoe Deja Vu: Topshops Samba and Boohoos Lorrie shoes

Just to prove that it’s not just the big-name designers who get to experience that sense of deja vu as they see their design crop up with someone else’s label attached, here’s Topshop’s ‘Samba’ cut-out peep toes, and Boohoo’s ‘Lorrie’. Spot the difference? Well, of course, there are lots of differences here, with the colour being the most obvious one, but there are a lot of similarities too - enough to make me do a double-take when I stumbled upon the second pair at Boohoo just a few hours after seeing the same design at Topshop.

Neither shoe is particularly to my taste, but if I had to pick, I’d probably go for the Topshop versions, which just look better quality to me, as well as being a nicer colour mix. If you’re judging them by price alone, though, the Boohoo shoes are a mere £25, compared to the £65 the Topshop versions will set you back.

Shoeperwoman’s Shoes: Office’s ‘Love Me Tender’ nautical heart peep toes

office love me tender1 Shoeperwomans Shoes: Offices Love Me Tender nautical heart peep toes

As soon as I saw these shoes on the Office website, I knew I had to make them mine.  Sure, they’re about as kitsch as it’s possible for a pair of shoes to be, but I love a bit of kitsch. I’m also a sucker for anything even vaguely nautical (the blue and white stripes count) and the love hearts on the toes? Sold, to the shoe superwoman with the thing about love hearts on shoes.

The shoes duly arrived, and are every bit as lovely as I thought they’d be. The uppers are actually a thick canvas fabric, which surprised me slightly because I hadn’t bothered to use the “zoom” function on the website, such was my haste to add them to my shopping cart. They’re super-summery, though, and I’ve been wearing them with faded jeans, tulip skirts and, when the weather gets a little bit better – hopefully sundresses too.

You’ll find some pictures of what they look like on after the jump…
