Shoe Deja Vu: Dorothy Perkins’ version of Andrew Wang’s peep toe ankle boots

    by

alexnder wang dorothy perki Shoe Deja Vu: Dorothy Perkins version of Andrew Wangs peep toe ankle bootsAs much as I dislike peep-toe boots in general and these Alexander Wang ones in particular, I think this is a good example of how the high street SHOULD emulate designer styles. The Dorothy Perkins boots on the right of the image above have the same kind of look and feel to them, and they also share the zips, eyelets, fold-over cuff and slightly strange “double ankle” design of the Alexander Wang versions, however they’re not SO similar that they could be accused of being knockoffs. What you get, then, is a shoes which is “designer inspired” in the true sense of the phrase, and a chance to get the same kind of look for a fraction of the price – these are just £55 to the £620 you’d pay for the Alexander Wang.

    It’s just a shame it’s not a style that I particularly want to “steal”…

harajuku lovers dobson Heroes or Villains: Harajuku Lovers Dobson bow tie bootsIt’s been a long time since we had a ‘Heroes or Villains’ post here, so rather than telling you what I think of Harajuku Lovers’ ‘Dobson’ boots – which look like they’re wearing a shirt and tie – I’m going to let you tell me.

Are they shoe heroes, or are they villains of the footwear world? Place your vote in the poll below, and don’t forget to tell me the reasons behind your vote!

Over-the-knee peep toe boots from Dune

over the knee boots dune Over the knee peep toe boots from DuneI’ve written a lot here about peep toe boots, and how much they confuse me. Some of you have agreed with me that the peep-toe-boot is a strange invention which should just DIE already, while others have tried to make me understand that in some cases – on a not-too-hot spring/summer day, say – the peep toe boot can actually work perfectly well, and be neither too hot or too cold.

I’m still not 10o% convinced (mostly because I just don’t like the look of bare toes peeking out of a boot), but I’m willing to accept that may well be the case.

I just can’t AT ALL see how over-the-knee peep toe boots could ever work, though. Not at all. It’s not even the old “if it’s cold enough to wear thigh high boots, it’s too cold to bare your toes” conundrum, either: it’s the thought of your whole body being covered except a couple of your toes. I can’t be sure until I’ve seen it done, of course, but I just think that’s going to look odd. And if you try to get around that “bare toes, leather-clad leg and thigh” look by wearing tights or socks with them… well, what was the point of buying peep toe boots in the first place?

I think my understanding of this whole concept has just regressed again. If you think these are just fine and dandy, though, they’re £160 from Dune.

Marc by Marc Jacobs suede peep toe boots

Another unusual heel from Marc Jacobs, but I like these a whole lot more than some of the “table leg” heels he’s been coming out with – or, indeed, the “surreal heel” of a couple of years ago. In fact, I was actually starting to get quite enthusiastic about these ankle boots until the dreaded peep toe reared its head toe. The curved shape of the sides is fabulous, the heel is growing on me… but seriously, how many pairs of peep toe boots can the shoe world churn out? WE GET IT, shoe designers: you’ve worked out how to cut holes in boots! You’re really clever! Now fill them back in, please, before our toes fall off. Thanks.

Topshop’s ‘Ashish’ wedge ankle boots in zebra and leopard print

topshop ashish ankle boots Topshops Ashish wedge ankle boots in zebra and leopard printThese arrived on the Topshop website yesterday morning. By the time I came to write this post, at 2pm, they were already sold out in the leopard print, with just a few sizes remaining in the zebra (and by the time you read this, those may well be gone too…).

It looks like this winter is going to be… interesting.

If you really want these, you should still be able to pick them up in larger branches. Oh, and they’re also available in black, but where’s the fun in that?

Shoe Deja Vu: Charlotte Russe Vs Steve Madden – studded booties

    by

charlotte russe studded boo Shoe Deja Vu: Charlotte Russe Vs Steve Madden studded bootiesNo, it’s not Groundhog Day – and I haven’t just posted the Steve Madden ‘Marvel’ booties twice by mistake either! When I wrote about those shoes last week, reader Jean emailed me to say they really reminded her of a pair of boots she’d seen at Charlotte Russe. And wow, but she’s right! The Charlotte Russe boots on the left aren’t just similar to the Steve Madden pair: they’re pretty much identical, no? As we know, Madden is well known for copying – I’m sorry, being inspired by - designer shoes, so this makes me think both of these must be a version of another shoe: I’m just not sure which one.

Either that or this time Steve Madden was inspired by, er, Charlotte Russe. Or they were inspired by him. Or… oh, I don’t know. In any case, the Charlotte Russe boots are $29.99 and also available in purple. Now, if only someone would make a version with a CLOSED TOE…

Steve Madden ‘Marvel’ studded peeptoe shoe boots

steve madden studded boots Steve Madden Marvel studded peeptoe shoe bootsOK, that’s it: I think my head is about to explode over the whole “peep toes on boots” thing.

I mean, take these Steve Madden shoe boots. They’re gorgeous. They’re just the right shape for wearing with jeans. I LOVE the suds. They’re expensive, but not prohibitively so. In fact, they’d be just about perfect IF THEY DIDN’T HAVE A FREAKING PEEP TOE ON THEM.

But they do.  And that’s just not going to work in the UK winter climate, so as much as I love everything else about them, I’m going to have to regretfully turn away from them, and think of them no more. Sad.

If you can live with cold toes in winter, these are £155 from My-Wardrobe.
