Shoes with ankle straps aren’t generally the first style I’ll reach for when I’m shopping (although I do have a few pairs which I love!), but something about the chunky shape of these court shoes from French Connection really drew me to them. I think the colour helps, here: these shoes are also available in black, and while they’re still nice, they just don’t pack quite as much of a punch as the red version, with their thick heel and matching platform.
You put these on via a zip at the back of the heel:
with the gold hardware on the zip and buckle also providing a bit of contrast with the red suede.
These are currently down to £136 from £160 at Spartoo, and are available in sizes 4 – 7.5. Click here to buy a pair.
I really should spend more time checking out French Connection’s shoes, shouldn’t I? If I’d done that, I’d have had a been able to show you these ‘Gillian’ sandals much sooner. Still, better late than never, so here they are, in all of their green satin upper, gold-bow-and-brooch glory. You’re going to need a close-up of that bow to be able to really appreciate it, though:
There we go. It has “Shoeperwoman” written all over it (although not literally, obviously: that would just be weird), doesn’t it?
If these have your name written all over them too, click here to buy them from Kurt Geiger, and don’t forget to leave me a comment to make me jealous…
These shoes fall firmly into the “I’d never, ever wear them, but somehow I can’t stop looking at them” category. Like many occupants of that particular category, I actually think there’s something quite ugly about them… and yet still I look. I probably wouldn’t have look at all, mind you, if it wasn’t for the shot of them actually being worn, which appears on the French Connection website, and demonstrates just how eye-catching these shoes are in the flesh. Chunky, strappy and with a bit of an fetish-wear feel to them somehow, which isn’t exactly what I’ve come to expect from French Connection, but that could just be me.
If these are exactly what you’re looking for, they’re £140 and you can buy them here.
I know a lot of fashion commentators have been claiming that the high heel is on its last legs (no pun intended) and that flats are the way forward, but I have to say, I’m not really seeing much sign of that actually happening, are you? In fact, every day, heels – and platforms – seem to get higher and higher. Pretty soon we’re going to need old-fashioned “mounting blocks” to b able to get into them.
French Connection’s ‘Sara’ pumps don’t quite fall into that category, thankfully, but they are cast in the image of the now familiar chunky-platform: the difference is that these do it a little better than most, and while the gold trim on the sole is a little on the flashy side, I don’t think they’d be too difficult to pull off. They’re £120 and available direct from French Connection.
This is by far my favourite heel shape at the moment, and as much as I hate the use of the word “fierce” when applied to fashion, I think it’s probably the best word for it. More modern than a stiletto, but not as clunky as a square heel, it has a bit of a “dangerous” look to it, while the black patent gives it a sexy edge. I really like the contrast of the parent and suede on these shoes, and while the heel has definite sex appeal, the front of the shoe is relatively restrained in comparison, so the effect isn’t too much. Not bad for a black court shoe, no?
I don’t pay nearly enough attention to French Connection. That fact was brought home to me today when I looked at the shoe section of their website and found at least five different pairs of shoes I’d happily give closet space to. Top of my list, however, is these ‘Joy’ knee high boots. They come in brown and black, mix leather and suede, and have a really luxurious look about them, somehow. Fanstastic for wearing over jeans or leggings this winter, they have a 4.4″ heel and 0.25″ platform, and are £200. Get them here.
