Shoeperheroes or Shoepervillains: Acne ‘Alice’ Silk Platform Pumps

acne alice platforms Shoeperheroes or Shoepervillains: Acne Alice Silk Platform Pumps

When I first spotted Acne’s ‘Alice’ platforms at Shopbop last week, I instantly hated them.

I actually really like the individual elements of these shoes, and I LOVE the colours on the left, which are two of my favourite shades ever, but the very high vamp just ruins it all for me, leaving the shoe looking… well, just WRONG somehow, as if they weren’t supposed to look like that. The shape of the upper is oddly “bloated”, too, which isn’t something I generally want to be able to say about my footwear.

Since that first look, though, I’ve seen these featured on quite a few fashion sites, whose authors all seem to be singing their praises. This hasn’t changed my own opinion, of course, but it did make me think they could be candidates for a Heroes or Villains post, so here it is!

Which are they? Heroes or Villains?

    Nicholas Kirkwood Scribble-Flower Colorblock Sandal

These are the kind of shoes I always think of as “Runway Footwear”: i.e., they’re the kind of shoes that look amazing on the runway, or as part of a fashion editorial, but which I’m always a little surprised to see actually go into production, because as fabulous as they are, they’re probably the kind of thing that are destined to generate a “love or hate” kind of response.

Designed to look like a colourblock sandal with a flower scribbled over the sides, these are   very creative, and amazing to look at. Would you wear them, though? And, more to the point, would you pay $1,250 for them?

After yesterday’s moment of mild horror from M. Louboutin, I’m pleased to see The Master return to form with these amazing crisscross platform sandals, which represent everything that is wonderful, from the red heel, to the crossover straps and, well, just everything really.

All is forgiven. Mr L. And mine is a size 37, just in case you’re wondering..

Meet Kurt Geiger’s ‘Esme’. Esme is one of those shoes which lures you in with her soft beige and eggshell upper – so far, so very soothing – and hits you smack in the face with a bright yellow heel:

    With studs on.

And OK, these shoes won’t actually smack you in the face: that would be really painful. The heels are a little bit unexpected, though, and although I do like them, my natural aversion to anything neon tells me that I’d have liked them even more without the yellow.

That’s just me, though, and I’m not sure the bright colour would put me off, were they to magically appear on my shoe shelves, say.

    Dorothy Perkins colourblock platform pumps

Navy and green are probably the two colours I wear most often (I’ll just give you a few seconds to recover from that deeply surprising bit of information, shall I?), so naturally, finding a shoe which combines both colours is like finding free Louboutins at the end of a rainbow. OK, no it isn’t: nothing would really beat free Louboutins, would it? But these Dorothy Perkins colourblock heels are still pretty cute: the chunky heel and two-toned bow both get my vote, and if navy and green aren’t your colours, there’s also this version:

These up the ante a little with three different colours, one of which is the season’s-essential (if you believe in such things): orange.

Finally, if you’re still not down with colourblocking, or if, like me, you have a bit of a problem with constantly buying more pairs of “nude” heels, I give you these:

I like them all, and I also like the £42 price tag: if you do, too, you can click here to buy a pair!

    Dune ‘Hotty’ colourblock platform pumps

These shoes have been clamouring for my attention for a while now. “Shoeperwoman!” they keep calling. “Put me on your blog! So that everyone can see me, and love me!”

I’ve been steadfastly ignoring these cries up until now because, well, there’s only so many pairs of colourblocked pumps I can take at any given time. Now that I’ve finally gotten round to these, though, I don’t know why I’ve been resisting them for so long, because although there are a lot of colour block platforms around right now, these still manage to be a bit different, and they do it by bringing the platform right up under the bridge of the foot, creating a chunky effect that’s really just an illusion: I don’t think these shoes are actually any thicker in that area than regular platforms: they just look like they are because of the platforms.

dune hotty black Dune Hotty colourblock platform pumpsI really like these, and if it wasn’t for the fact that I’ve been favouring non-platformed shoes (or ones with a concealed platform) lately, I’d probably be sorely tempted by them.

ASOS HUSH Colour Blocked Bow Platform Sandal

OK, that’s it, I’ve had enough.I thought I was, like, totally down with the whole colourblocking thing, I really did. I mean, I was even inspired to try some colour combinations of my own which I’d preciously never even dreamed of, and for me, that was kind of a Big Deal.

Today, though, I think I’ve discovered where my limit is with this trend, and it’s here, with the combination of orange, green and blue:

orange green and blue shoes ASOS HUSH Colour Blocked Bow Platform Sandal

I like all of these colours individually, but together they hurt my eyes. And honestly, an orange shoe with a green embellishment at this time of year is just BEGGING to be compared to a pumpkin, isn’t it?

All of that said, I do like the other two options for these Hush sandals from ASOS: black and pink and cream and silver are combinations that it’s hard to go wrong with, and I also like the contrast of the sequined straps on each shoe. I’ll now surprise you by saying I don’t love the shape of the bow on these, although I don’t hate it either.

What do you think of these? They’re £75 at ASOS.

    Aldo ‘Kovac’ colourblock platform heels

colourblock shoes Aldo Kovac colourblock platform heels

I was going to begin this post with an apology for featuring yet another pair of colourblock shoes, but honestly, I think we just need to accept that this trend isn’t going anywhere for the foreseeable future, so we may as well just get used to it!

This particular example is from Aldo, and comes in two different colourways: the Autumn-appropriate purple and green mix, or the lighter, brighter cream and taupe. I like both, but suspect cream suede probably wouldn’t be a great match for the Scottish weather, and while ANY suede upper is always going to be at risk from the rain, I’d probably go for the darker colours, in the hope that they’d last a little longer.

These are $110 at Zappos: click here to buy them/
