1. Shoe Deja Vu: Buffalo ‘Berline’ Vs Carvela ‘Assemble’

    Buffalo ‘Berline‘, £45

Normally when I write Shoe Deja Vu posts, I show you two pairs of shoes: the original and the “copy” (or “inspired” version, if you prefer!). This time, however, I didn’t bother, because the two pairs of shoes in question are SO identical I’m convinced it’s actually just one shoe, re-branded.

This wouldn’t be too surprising. We’ve spoken before about how many high street brands buy their shoes from the same manufacturer, who simply changes the name on the insole as required. I’ve long suspected that Buffalo and Carvela fall into this category, because I fairly frequently notice them selling identical shoes, and these ‘Berline’ pumps are just the latest example of that. If you’re a Carvela fan, you’ll probably instantly have recognised these as their ‘Assemble’ pumps from last year. I have the turquoise version, but secretly always loved the white glitter one, too, which is why I’m showing you these now. This is exactly the same shoe, but while the Carvela version retailed for £120, and sold out last year, these are currently on sale for just £45, and are still available in all sizes, so if you missed out on them last time, this could be your chance to grab a pair.

I think these would make fabulous and unusual bridal shoes, but given the current popularity of bright white shoes, you might just be able to make them work with more casual outfits too, even with that glittery upper. As for me, I’d be tempted to buy them just to put them out on display: I’m not sure how much wear I’d get out of them, but I do know I’d never tire of looking at them!

With my Shoe Challenge now complete, I’ve been very much looking forward to being able to acquire new shoes without having to worry about having to try to wear them before the end. With that in mind, I deliberately steered clear of the sales, and avoided buying any new footwear in the  final few weeks of the challenge. These ones are the first new shoes since the challenge ended, and I was a little worried they’d arrive before it ended, so I went for a “sensible” purchase I knew I’d have no trouble saving if I had to: Buffalo’s ‘Beyza’ court shoes in black patent.

Now, as some of you may recall, I already own the nude version of these shoes, and really like them. I originally bought them as a “pre-Pigalle” purchase: I was waiting for a pair of Louboutin’s ‘Pigalles’ to come into stock, and figured the Buffalo shoes would be a useful stand-in until that happened, as they’re a similar, pointed shape. I got my Pigalles in October, but still wear the Buffalos fairly often, mostly on days where I’d like to wear the Pigalles, but know the weather, or amount of walking I’m planning to do, would make that a bad idea. (I don’t believe in keeping shoes for “best”, but I also don’t believe in ruining expensive shoes in the rain!) I decided to get the black version for exactly the same reason: I do already have a pair of Pigalle stand-ins, in the form of my beloved ‘Olsen’ pumps from Dune, but as much as I love them, they’re definitely “car to bar” shoes, and not much use for actual walking. I know the ‘Beyza’ shoes are very comfortable, so I figured they’d be a useful addition to my collection, and allow me to fill that “black patent courts that are actually comfortable” shaped hole on my shoe shelves.

Well, I was right. I’ve only had these for a few days, and they’ve already had their inaugural wearing (so I needn’t have worried about getting them through the challenge!), so I can report that they’re just as comfortable and easy to wear as the nude versions. I was forced to go half a size down with my first pair of these, because it was the only size left, but that size fit well enough I’d have gone for the same size in these, except this time IT wasn’t available, so I got my usual size 4 instead. The fit is fine, and perfectly comfortable: I still think the 3.5 feels a little more secure on the foot, but as I say, these were perfectly comfortable (even when walking over cobbles in them!) so it’s not a big deal.

I had some money left over on my voucher, and used it to buy this little nude/black clutch by Dune. I’m a little bit obsessed with clutch bags, and frequently carry one during the day, instead of a shoulder bag, and this is a colour combination I really love. It also works really well with the black patent of the shoes, which was an added bonus!

Shoes and bag are both currently available at Sarenza, and both currently on sale, too: find them here.

SHOES: Buffalo ‘Besma’ yellow shoe boots c/o Sarenza
    SAVED: Saturday, December 8th, 2012

For my November Sarenza Brand Ambassador pick I decided to go with the Buffalo shoe boots I featured here a few weeks ago. I was actually torn between this mustard colour and the navy blue version these also come in, but went with the yellow because I’ve been wearing quite a bit of this colour lately. My mustard Topshop pumps are one of the most frequently worn shoes in my collection at the moment, and I find the colour much more versatile than you might think (I’m particularly keen on it with blue denim), but as the weather gets colder, and pumps become less and less practical, I figured these could make a nice alternative.

Well, to make a long story short, I think I was right about that. These arrived on Friday afternoon, and I lost no time in saving them, wearing them all day on Saturday. They’re basically a winter version of the ‘Glam’ pumps: the height, shape and colour is almost identical, but the fact that they’re shoe boots rather than pumps means that they’re that bit warmer, and I also mange to neatly avoid the “tights” issue, because, worn with trousers, you can’t see them anyway.

I got these in my usual size four, and found them true to size, and very comfortable to wear. Like most boots, they provide more ankle support than pumps do, and you don’t have to worry about heel slippage, so I had no problems with them, other than those of the “avoiding puddles” variety. I was also really impressed with the quality: these have a real suede upper with a leather insole, so they’re very soft and supple – exactly  what you need in a pair of boots, basically.

I can definitely see myself getting a lot of wear out of these, and think they make a nice alternative to the usual blue and black. Now, about that navy version…

  4. Buffalo gold glitter ballet flats with bow

    glitter ballet flats

Buffalo gold glitter flat shoes, £45.99

Glitter AND bows, all on the same pair of shoes? Well, you can most definitely count me in: and while I wouldn’t normally turn to flats when it comes to party time, I have a feeling that by the time the holiday season is over, some of us might be glad of a pair of comfortable-but-sparkly shoes to replace the killer heels!

These have a gold glitter upper with a silver bow on the toe. I’ve mentioned before that mixed metallics is one of those things I’m used to thinking of as a bit of a no-no, but as with most fashion “rules”, it’s pretty old-fashioned, and made to be broken. Actually, I think almost any colour combination can work if it’s done correctly, and these shoes are a case in point. If the bow was the same colour as the upper, they’d still be pretty, but they wouldn’t have quite the same impact, so this is one case where I definitely approve of the two together, and I especially like the way the silver on the bow is carried through to the lining around the foot.

A good choice for those of you who want to steer clear of the heels, but still dress up your feet, these are £45.99 at Spartoo.

  5. Shoe Review: Simple Red pumps by Buffalo

    red high heel shoes

    red high heels

    red heels

Remember a few months back, when I bought those cheap red heels from Primark, and said that I’d probably have worn them out by the end of the year?

Well, I wasn’t exaggerating as much as you probably assumed I was. No, they’re not worn out yet, but in the short time I’ve owned them, those shoes have had more use than most of the rest of my shoe collection combined, so naturally my mind has turned to the important question of what on earth I’m going to do when they finally give up the ghost? For me, a pair of simple red pumps is a shoe-wardrobe essential: how on earth will I live without them?

Well, luckily for me, and thanks to the generosity of fashion and beauty site Zalando, that’s not something I’m going to have to worry about for a while yet, because a couple of weeks ago I identified the successors to the red shoe crown, in the shape of these red heels by Buffalo. As you may have noticed, Buffalo is a brand I’ve been wearing rather a lot of over the past year: I like them because their shoes are modern, affordable, and always interesting. I also love the fact that they tend to release many of their styles in lots of different colours: I got these ones in red, but they also come in bright blue, brown and black. All of those colours would come in useful in such a classic style, but naturally I went for my favourite “neutral”, red.

This particular shade is actually more of a pinkish-red than my other pair, as you can probably see from the photos. It’s still a bright, versatile shade, which I think will be particularly nice in spring and summer. As for the quality, these are just £50, which provides a good clue that they’re not real leather. I don’t think I would have realised that if I hadn’t read it in the product description, though: the upper is good quality, and (unsurprisingly) far superior to the Primark version, so I’d say they’re pretty good value for money, especially considering how much wear you could conceivably expect to get out of them.

I went for my usual size 4, and found them true to size. I’ve yet to wear them for the entire day, but the upper is soft and pliable, so I don’t anticipate any issues: I guess I’ll find out soon!

These are £50 at Zalando UK, and are available in all of the colours mentioned above.

  6. Buffalo ‘Besma’ mustard yellow shoe boots

    yellow shoe boots

Buffalo ‘Besma’ mustard yellow shoe boots, £76

Two of my main winter fashion obsessions right now:

    1. The colour mustard

    2. Shoe boots

So it figures that these mustard shoe boots would catch my attention for all the right reasons, doesn’t it?

Actually, it’s not just the yellow version of these that have me drooling: they also come in navy (my favourite dark-coloured neutral, and a colour you don’t find on too many boots), burgundy (hot colour of the season, but a winter staple every year) and black (well, OK, they had to make them in black too, don’t they?) and I’d happily wear every single one of those. If I had to choose between them, though, the yellow would definitely win: I have a pair of shoes in this shade which I’ve worn frequently this year, but which aren’t getting quite so much use now that the weather has turned chilly. These are basically a winter-appropriate version of them, and it’s so unusual to find boots in this colour that I have to give Buffalo some major credit for creating them!

  7. Sarenza Pick of the Month: Buffalo ‘Beyza’ nude patent court shoes

Buffalo 'Beyza' nude patent court shoes

As some of you know, I’ve been more than a little bit obsessed with Christian Louboutin’s nude patent ‘Pigalle’ pumps for a while now, and until the glorious day arrives when I can finally make them mine, I’ve been on the lookout for a high street version I can get some wear out of in the meantime.

That made August’s Sarenza Brand Ambassador pick an easy one for me: I’d spotted Buffalo’s ‘Beyza’ pumps early in the month, but unfortunately they’d already sold out in my size, so I decided to wait a while and see if the UK 4 ever came back into stock. When it didn’t, I’m ashamed to admit I did something I’ve sworn not to do, and which I wouldn’t really recommend to anyone else: I ordered the 3.5 instead. Well, I figured a half-size down might not make too much difference to the fit, and luckily I was right: as you would expect, they’re definitely smaller than my usual size, but not by enough to render them unwearable, and after just a couple of hours’ wear around the house, I already couldn’t tell they were a 3.5 rather than a 4: phew! Don’t try this at home, though, kids!

This was a big relief to me, because by the time I’d tried them on with multiple different outfits, and realised that, unsurprisingly, they really DO work with everything, I would’ve hated to have had to return them. These are destined to become a staple for me over the next few months, and I can see them replacing my beloved Carvela ‘Australia’ peep toes (Which have rarely been off my feet since I got them, they’re THAT perfect) as  the most-worn shoes of the Autumn.

These have patent leather uppers, and are a great, go-with-everything shade of beige. Interestingly, the heels are actually a shade lighter than the upper: it’s not quite as obvious in real life as it is in the photos (I actually only noticed it when I looked back at the photos, and I think the flash has made it look much more obvious than it really is) but there is a very slight difference in the shade, which I probably wouldn’t have noticed if I hadn’t been taking photos!

  8. Shoeper Shoesday

    by

    Shoeper Shoesday

Inspired by the horrible weather we’ve had this summer (and which I’m sure you’re all sick of me mentioning by now: sorry!), earlier this month I decided it was high time for me to invest in some “sensible” shoes: the kind of shoes I could wear in the rain, or in the cold, and which I wouldn’t  have to worry about ruining by tramping through mud in them while out walking the dog, say, or doing almost anything else outdoors this year.

To this end, I ordered a pair of biker boots, a pair of sneakers, and a pair of flats. Of those, these black pumps by Buffalo are the only ones which didn’t get returned. The biker boots were much too big, and made me look like a cartoon character. The sneakers were perfectly nice, but just weren’t me, and as soon as I put them on I realised they were the kind of shoes I’d keep “just in case”, but would end up never wearing. Both went straight back the next day.

The flats, however, I kept, and while they’re far from the most exciting shoes I’ll ever buy, they’re really well made, and I love the low vamp and pointed toe, which gives them a bit of an Audrey Hepburn vibe – or I like to think so, anyway.

I’m not counting these towards my Shoe Challenge total, but I AM wearing them today, in honour of Shoeper Shoesday. If you’d like to join in and show me what you’re wearing on your feet today, submit your link below!
