Poll says women own an average of 17 pairs of shoes – but only wear 3 pairs on a regular basis

shoe statistics Poll says women own an average of 17 pairs of shoes but only wear 3 pairs on a regular basis

When I started my Shoe Challenge this year, and started collecting all of your shoe totals, I was reassured to find that my own shoe collection (currently sitting at 71 pairs) wasn’t particularly out of the ordinary: sure, there were a lot of people with fewer shoes than me, but there were also lots of you with many, many more pairs, so I figured that while my collection is just a little bit on the extravagant side, I wasn’t too unusual in my shoe-buying habits.

Apparently I was wrong about that, however, because according to the results of a poll released this week by ShopSmart, the “average” amount of shoes owned by women over the age of 18 is… 17 pairs. Now, while I haven’t bothered to actually work it out, I suspect the average for readers of this site is a little higher than that (When I was adding Shoe Challenge participants to the member’s list, I felt like the average number of shoes was probably somewhere in the mid-twenties), although that result is probably a little skewed, given that people who read this site are much more likely to have a higher than average interest in footwear, but the statistic that really interested me in this poll, is this one:

Of those 17 pairs of shoes, most of the women surveyed admitted to wearing ONLY THREE PAIRS on a regular basis.

And that right there is why I started my Shoe Challenge last year. I can well believe that most people out there are only getting regular use out of a small percentage of their shoe collections, so at least those of you taking part in this year’s challenge can take comfort in the fact that you hopefully won’t be one of those statistics. In the meantime, here are some more shoe-related stats for you, all from the same survey:

Net-a-Porter’s new Shoe Subscription Service gives you one pair of shoes every month for a year

net a porter shoe subscription Net a Porters new Shoe Subscription Service gives you one pair of shoes every month for a year

How would you like a new pair of shoes from Net-a-Porter, every month for an entire year?

I know, stupid question, right? Of course you would!

Well, folks, the good news is that Net-a-Porter’s new Shoe Subscription service will allow you to get them. And the bad news? It’s going to cost you. A lot. The service, which Net-a-Porter are describing – quite rightly – as “the perfect holiday gift”, will set you back £8,000, which means that you’re paying £666 for each pair of shoes. Ah. This definitely isn’t aimed at the likes of me, then, because I’d be lucky if I spend £666 on shoes in a year (Actually, I’m not going to think too hard about that one…), but if you are in the habit of splurging hundreds on shoes every month, you also get sneak previews of new styles, the chance to pre-reserve new releases, express shipping and styling advice from Net-a-Porter’s fashion advisors.

If all of that’s enough to tempt you, you’ll have to click here for information on how to purchase – the offer isn’t available online, so you’ll have to speak to Net-a-Porter directly to arrange it. How the other half live, hmm?

Biba shoes now available at Viva la Diva

biba shoes Biba shoes now available at Viva la Diva

When I was a little bit younger, I went through a stage of being obsessed with all things Biba. My mum had been a big fan of the brand in the 60s, and she gave me a book about how it got started, which piqued my interest and made me sad that it was no longer around.

Of course, fast-forward a few years and Biba made a comeback, although sadly not under the guidance of original founder  Barbara Hulanicki. It’s now onto its second re-launch, and this time around the footwear from the brand is being sold at Viva la Diva, which has over 100 different Biba styles available, including these fabulous platforms, with prices starting from just £50. Want to take a look? Click here to visit the Viva la Diva website.

    Lanvin for H&M: the shoes

    by

lanvin for hm shoes Lanvin for H&M: the shoesI’m assuming most people reading this will have heard all about the upcoming collaboration between Lanvin and H&M, which will go on sale in selected branches of H&M on the 23rd of this month. I love some of the party dresses that are included with this collection, but I have to say, the shoes aren’t particularly to my taste, which is probably a good thing because our local branch of H&M is never one of the “selected stores”, and even if it was, I don’t really fancy queuing for hours anyway!

What do you think of the footwear selection shown above, though? Prices will be£69.99 per pair, which is significantly cheaper than the mainline Lanvin collection. Will you be tempted to buy a pair, and which ones will you go for if so?

Christian Louboutin launches online store: but only in the U.S.

christian louboutin online store Christian Louboutin launches online store: but only in the U.S.

Readers, I have good news and bad news.

The good news is that Christian Louboutin has finally started selling shoes online, via his official website. That means there’s no longer any need to hunt around to find particular styles – they’re all there, on one website. Wonderful.

The bad news is that you can currently only shop from the store if you’re in the United States. Of course, if you ARE in the U.S.  that means I bring you good news and more good news, but given that I’m not in the U.S., I have to confess to being a little disappointed, although I guess it’s probably best that all those shoes be kept safely out of my reach.

Click here to visit the store, and, if you’re very lucky, shop from it!

Cinderella Me: the designer shoe-hire site

cinderella me Cinderella Me: the designer shoe hire site

Love designer shoes, but hate designer prices? Don’t we all. Cinderella Me, however, is a new site which aims to give us access to some of our favourite designer footwear for a fraction of the price on the box. The catch, however, is that you’re hiring the shoes rather than buying them, so you will have to persuade yourself to part with them at the end of the week!

The idea is similar to some of the designer dress hire companies that have been around for a few years now: you choose the shoes you want from a selection on the website (They carry brands like Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, Dior, etc), and they’re sent to you to wear for a week, at the end of which time you send them back, ready for the next person. Prices are around £80 per week, although some shoes cost more and some cost less.

Now, I know what you’re thinking here, because I thought it too: what about hygiene? After all, the idea of wearing shoes that God knows how many other pairs of sweaty feet have already occupied isn’t exactly appealing is it? Worry not, though: the site goes to great lengths to assure clients that each pair of shoes is carefully cleaned and sanitised before it’s sent out, so the shoes should look and feel as good as new.

What does everyone think of this idea? Is it something you’d like to try, or would you rather just either save up the money and buy the shoes outright, or take the £80 and spend them on a pair of less expensive shoes instead?

Take a look at the Cinderella Me website here.

Shoes of Prey: the site that lets you design and buy your own shoes!

shoes of prey Shoes of Prey: the site that lets you design and buy your own shoes!

I don’t know about the rest of you, but often when I go shoe-shopping, I have something very specific in mind. The problem with that, though, is that “in mind” is normally where that oh-so-perfect shoe remains, because no matter how long and hard I look, I can never find it in the real world. It’s like the quest for the Holy Grail only, you know, with shoes.

This is why I’ve just lost a big chunk of my Monday morning to Shoes of Prey – a website that lets you take your dream shoe and turn it into reality. You get to choose the heel height, colours, embelishments, toe and heel shape… you get the picture. And when you’re done, you get to order the shoes you’ve just designed: your quest for the Holy Grail is finally over.

As you’d expect with a bespoke service like this, these aren’t what you’d call Budget Buys – prices start at £150 for flat and go up to £180 for the highest height of heel – but I don’t think they’re too unreasonable either, given that the shoes are being made to your own specifications.

The results look rather nice, too:

What do you think of this idea? Does it sound like something you would use? If it does, check out the Shoes of Prey website for more information.
