Shoe Deja Vu: YSL Palais Vs Kelsi Dagger ‘Abrielle’

Capture1 Shoe Deja Vu: YSL Palais Vs Kelsi Dagger Abrielle

It’s the familiar shape of YSL’s ‘Palais’ platforms… on a shoe by Kelsi Dagger.

    THIS is the YSL shoe:

YSL palais Shoe Deja Vu: YSL Palais Vs Kelsi Dagger AbrielleAs you can see, the overhang on the toe is more extreme in the original, as is the curve on the heel. The basic shape is the same, tough, and Kelsi Dagger’s ‘Arielle’ is just one of many versions of this shoe that you’ll be able to find at the moment, so no need to despair over the £520 price tag on the originals: these ones are just $129, and are available in five different colours: click here to take a look.

Shoe Deja Vu: Charlotte Russe Vs.. everyone

At some point between starting to put this post together and finishing it, I came down with a heavy cold. I’m currently typing this surrounded by tissues and cold medicine, so I hope you’ll forgive me for keeping the words to a minimum, and letting the pictures do the talking here: in short, these are just a few of the incidents of Shoe Deja Vu I’ve had while browsing the Charlotte Russe website lately, and while some are more blatant than others, I’m starting to wonder if CR may be making an attempt to steal Steve Madden’s title of King of the Copycats. Take a look, and tell me what you think…

Shoe Deja Vu: Charlotte Russe Vs Christian Louboutin Lady Clou Spike

I’m sure no one actually needs me to tell them which shoe is the designer shoe and which is the copy here, but just in case, the Charlotte Russe shoes are on the left of the image, with Christian Louboutin’s Lady Clou Spike slingbacks on the right.

Once again, these aren’t an exact copy: the placement of the spikes is different, and the CR version looks… well, cheap… compared to the Louboutins, but the inspiration is unmistakable, no?

Even stranger is these Charlotte Russe peep toes:

This style has popped up from a few different designers now: does this mean River Island is starting to provide “inspiration” to other designers, too? Nothing would surprise me…

Topshop ‘Giggles’ heart print pointed toe pumps

I seem to be experiencing Shoe Deja Vu everywhere I look at the moment: as soon as I saw Topshop’s ‘Giggles’ pumps, for instance, I was reminded of these Dolce & Gabbana peep toes:

dolce gabbana heart print peep toes Topshop Giggles heart print pointed toe pumpsThey’re not the same, obviously, but the contrasting hearts are definitely similar. In this case, however, I think I like the Topshop version more: as you may know, I’m a fan of hearts on shoes (or anything else, really), and the ones on the right of the image above are possibly the only thing that could possibly induce me to buy a white, pointed-toe stiletto.

If white isn’t for you, however, these also come in black, and there’s a version with gold hearts, too. They’re £58 at Topshop: click here to buy them.

Shoe Deja Vu: Christian Louboutin ‘Duvette’ Vs Mango cap toe pumps

I love Christian Louboutin’s ‘Duvette’ pumps:

    I don’t, however, love the $675 price tag, so…

… here’s a much cheaper alternative from Mango!

Now, I know these probably don’t look like much when you see them right next to the Louboutins. This is another case where the high street brand has drawn inspiration from the designer one without resorting to outright copying, and I think they’ve done a pretty good job for those of us who love the look of the Loubies, but just can’t justify the price. I’d possibly have to try and somehow erase the first shoes from my mind before buying these, though, just so I didn’t have to constantly compare them!

These ones are £74.90: click here to buy them.

Silver Tassel Pumps by Alexander Wang and Topshop

silver shoes alexander wang topshop Silver Tassel Pumps by Alexander Wang and Topshop

These are the types of Shoe Deja Vu I like the most: the ones where the two pairs of shoes aren’t identical, but are just similar enough that you can see where the inspiration came from.

Looked at point by point, Topshop’s ‘Planet’ (on the left of the image) and Alexander Wang’s ‘Anais’ are completely different: the Topshop shoes have a platform, the Wang shoes have none; the Topshop shoes have a chunky heel, the Wangs a slim one; the Topshop shoes have a pointed toe and stitching around the vamp, the Wangs have a squared-off toe and no stitching; the high street shoes have flat tassels, the designer shoes have round ones; finally, the Alexander Wang shoe has that huge, exaggerated tongue, while the Topshop version is much smaller. In other words, they’re totally different but for the colour, and yet, as soon as I looked at the ‘Planet’ shoes, I was instantly reminded of ‘Anais’, and when you see them side-by-side, they’re certainly similar.

This is the best kind of “designer” inspiration, as far as I’m concerned, in that it’s ACTUAL “Inspiration”, as opposed to blatant copying. That doesn’t mean I’d buy them – neither of these are my style, although if I had to pick, I actually think I’d prefer the Topshop shoes – but if you’re a fan of the ‘Anais’ shoes, but don’t want to spend $650 on them, Topshop’s £95 version could be just what you’re looking for!

    Which do you prefer?

P.S. Just after I finished this post, I came across this version, from ASOS, which share the outsized tongue of the designer shoes, but which use a totally different design other than that: another good way to get the same kind of look on a much smaller budget.

Shoe Deja Vu: ASOS HANDFULL Vs Jessica Simpson

    by
    4

asos handfull shoes Shoe Deja Vu: ASOS HANDFULL Vs Jessica Simpson  I spotted these shoes at ASOS last week, and almost passed them by, thinking I’d already written about them. I haven’t, though: the shoes I was thinking of were these ones, by Jessica Simpson:

jessica simpson shoes colourblock sandals Shoe Deja Vu: ASOS HANDFULL Vs Jessica Simpson And, WOW, but they really are totally identical, aren’t they? In fact, they’re SO identical that I spent a few minutes convinced that ASOS must have started stocking Jessica Simpson shoes, and just forgotten to put the brand name on the listing, but nope: they don’t stock Jessica Simpson, and these are listed simply as “ASOS Handfull”. What’s more, they retail for £75, which is actually MORE than the Jessica Simpson shoes, which work out at £56, at the current exchange rate.

Of course, I can’t say for sure which of these shoes came first (and actually, the more I look at them, the more I become convinced that they’re BOTH inspired by a designer shoe, which escapes me for the moment), but either way, I reckon someone’s taken their inspiration just a little too literally here, no?

Shoe Deja Vu: Carvela ‘Glam’ Vs Chockers ‘Dorothy’

knockof carvelas Shoe Deja Vu: Carvela Glam Vs Chockers Dorothy

I’m sure you all remember Carvela’s ‘Glam’ platforms: not just because I showed you them just a few weeks ago, but because they’re definitely one of the more memorable of this year’s shoes, what with those sequinned uppers and shiny gold platforms!

if you do remember ‘Glam’, then I’m sure you’ll have instantly recognised the “inspiration” behind Chockers’ very similar ‘Dorothy’ platforms. These also have the sequins, the bow and the platform, but they come in a little cheaper at £35.

What do you think? Does the lower price make you more likely to try them? Does the copycat design bother you at all?
