Jimmy Choo Light-Up Platform Sandals

“Please don’t let them ACTUALLY light up,” I thought when I read the product name on these shoes. “Please let it just be a NAME, and not an actual description of what they do!” Because, although I know light-up heels are (or were – I don’t really follow these things) popular on children’s shoes, surely that’s where they should stay? Surely on a “grown up” shoe, a light-up heel would just look gimmicky and, dare I say it, tacky: neither of which are words I would usually associate with the Jimmy Choo brand?

People, the heels light up. They’re designed in much the same way as the light-up sneakers mentioned above, so that when your foot hits the ground, the heel will light up. And it’s a yellow heel. With a red sole. And I don’t know… I’ve read a few gushing reviews of these shoes from my fellow bloggers, but I think I’m going to have to be the voice of dissent here and say that this is just way too gimmicky for me to want to spend $2,495 on. I’d make a joke here about them “lighting up your life”, but I’m actually still in shock at having to write the words “Jimmy Choo” and “light-up heels” in the same sentence, so feel free to make up your own jokes there. Oh, and feel free to head over to Saks and buy them, too, if you so desire!

Brian Atwood Katie Lee patent sandals

I’ve spoken before of my dislike for clear plastic on shoes, but I’m going to be fickle here and say I think these Brian Atwood sandals are exactly the right way to do it, with the clear section at the end of the strap creating the illusion that the strap is shorter than it actually is, and creating a really nice, unusual effect. Without it, the sandals would’ve been just a tad on the “boring” side, but with it they’re a little less ordinary, and a versatile dress shoe.

They’re £390 at Net-a-Porter.

Dorothy Perkins have just started stocking some styles by shoe brand ‘Timeless’, so the first thing to note about these shoes is that they’re ‘timeless’ by name, not necessarily by nature.

As it happens, I don’t think these shoes are particularly timeless-by-nature. At first glance I was instantly seduced by the bow on the front, which is certainly cute enough, but underneath that I’m seeing something I think of as a “clubbing shoe” – especially in the metallic purple version, seen in the middle of this photo.

Clubbing isn’t something I do a whole lot of these days, so shoes like this don’t hold a whole lot of appeal for me. If they appeal to you, though, they’re £55 and you can buy them here.

ASOS PEGASUS Chainmail High Sandals

I think I’ve mentioned before that I’m currently a little bit obsessed with blue in general, and with navy in particular, so it was actually the colour of these shoes that caught my attention first, rather than the much more obvious chainmail detailing around the ankle. Once you’ve noticed the chainmail, though, it becomes impossible to ignore, and that’s the whole idea. These sandals are actually quite interesting, because they mix a daywear style with a sequined upper, which is something I generally associate with evening shoes. Sequins are becoming more and more popular on daywear, though, so you could probably get away with wearing these anywhere you like, and dressing them up or down as the occasion required.

What do you think of them? If you like them, head over to ASOS, where you can buy a pair for £40.

Yves Saint Laurent Chloris 105 Sandals

Yves Saint Laurent Chloris 105 Sandal

Not only do these shoes have a flower on the ankle strap, they also have a branch for a heel, making them look like some kind of strange organic growth, rather than a man-made shoe. This is a look we’ve been seeing a fair bit of in shoe design over the past couple of seasons, and I’m still on the fence about it. On the one hand, I like the fact that shoes like this are that little bit unusual, but on the other hand, I don’t actually think the branch-effect is particularly pleasing to look at. What do you think?

What I do love about these shoes is the colour: they’re also available in tan, but this vibrant red is the one that would win my heart. These are $895 at Saks.

This is my second pink shoe pick of the day, but these ‘Lorna’ sandals from Faith are a little less vivid than the Tory Burch numbers I showed you earlier today – in fact, in the right light, they could almost pass as nude. That’s good news in the “will go with anything” stakes, and actually, I think these shoes are good news all round: I’m loving t-bar styles in general at the moment, and these combine a t-bar shape with satin uppers, a generous platform and a pretty little diamante detail on the toe.

These are also available in grey, with a black platform, but I think this pale pink is the nicer of the two colours. If you want to see for yourself, they’re £65 from Faith.

Tory Burch pink ‘Wrap Up’ sandals

I have a shocking confession to make. You may want to sit down before I say it.

Are you sitting down? OK, here goes…

I’ve never really “got” the appeal of Tory Burch’s famous flats.

I know people rave about them. I know they always seem to be spoken about as a “shoe staple”.  And they’re possibly the most comfortable shoes in all the world, for all I know. But I just don’t get them. Don’t get me wrong: I don’t hate them. They’re totally inoffensive to look at, but that’s all they are as far as I can see, so I’ve never quite understood why so many people seem to love them.

These shoes, on the other hand? These I can totally understand. Sure, they’re so pink you might need sunglasses to wear them, and those ankle ties will have lots of you shouting “Cankles! Cankles!” at the screen right this very second, but still, I’d take them over the flats any day. Anyone else? If so, they’re £295 at Net-a-Porter.

Pewter crossover ‘Tia’ sandals from Faith

Up until a few years ago, it used to be the case that most evening shoes were delicate, strappy creations, that could barely be seen on the foot. Those styles still have their place, of course (they’re fantastic if you’re wearing a statement dress, and don’t want to detract attention from it with your shoes), but they do start to blend into one another after a while, so I’ve started to lean towards chunkier shoes, like these ones from Faith, when it comes to evening wear.

Although these will cover quite a bit of the foot, they’re still very glamorous: for some reason I keep picturing them worn with a white, Marilyn Monroe-style halter-neckdress, but the pewter colour will work with almost anything, and although they’re great to look at in their own right, they won’t steal too much attention away from whatever else you’re wearing, either.

These are £60, and you can buy them at Faith.

Miu Miu glitter embellished platform sandals

I know I’m always saying that I’m not fond of glitter or sequins on shoes, but I should probably STOP saying it, because no sooner are the words out of my keyboard than some glitter-covered shoes will come along, and force me to eat those words. They’re normally made by Miu Miu, now I come to think of it.

These spectacular platform sandals are the latest lovelies to have me thinking, “You know, maybe I DO need a pair of glitter-covered shoes after all?” They’re just begging to be danced in, and even although they have a 5.5 inch heel, I’m sure I’m not the only one who’d love to take them up on that. If you would, too, they’re £365 at Net-a-Porter, which means that if you just set aside one tiny pound every day for the next year, you’ll be able to afford them no problem. And when you put it like that…

This is the second pair of black and gold shoes I’ve featured here today, but I hope you’ll forgive me for that once you’ve had the chance to gaze upon the loveliness of these Rupert Sanderson sandals.

These don’t look particularly “gladiator-like” to me, but I’m not going to quibble over the name when there are beautiful shoes to be looked at, and anyway, if ALL gladiator sandals were as gorgeous as these ones, I’d be a very happy Shoeperwoman. Of course, the combination of black and gold on a shoe has always been one of my favourites, but these are particularly nicely done, and are dressy without being fussy. The strong lines of these, plus that shiny gold, would make these perfect with a simple dress: they’re £693 at Louisa Via Roma.
