High Street Shoes that won’t cost you the earth

Buffalo green polka dot platform sandals and red flats

green polka dot sandals Buffalo green polka dot platform sandals and red flats

There’s an obvious bit of Shoe Deja Vu going on here between these Buffalo sandals, and Miu Miu’s polka dot platforms from last summer: the bright green upper, the crossover front, the ankle strap and the platform. Nevertheless, they’re not identical: the Buffalo version adds a blue platform, and uses slimmer straps -there’s definitely no danger of them being mistaken for Miu Miu, but I’m rather taken with them all the same, as you can probably imagine. Well, green, polka dots, bright blue – it’s like they were made just to tempt me.

While we’re on the subject of polka dots, temptation, and Buffalo, here’s another pair from their summer collection which caught my eye:

Although I’m not a huge fan of flat shoes, I always like to have at least one red pair in stock at any given time, and I wear them until they fall apart, red being one of my shoe “neutrals”. These ones are super-cute, and will add a touch of fun to even a dull pair of jeans…or shorts, or whatever else you want to wear them with.

Office mint patent ‘Kourt’ shoes

OK, I give you all fair warning here: I am absolutely obsessed with mint right now. Obsessed. And yes, I know I’m more or less always obsessed with green, in all of its various guises, but it would seem that the fashion world is aiding and abetting me with the “mint” thing, because I’ve been seeing products in this shade everywhere lately: in fact, I bought a mint coloured dress just this week, and I have my eye on some more minty fresh pieces too. I may need an intervention.

Mint coloured shoes are also on my list, of course, and at the very top of that list is Office’s ‘Kourt’, which I have to point out is their deliberate spelling error, not mine. A standard shape and a beautiful colour make these almost irresistible to me, and I wouldn’t say no to the nude version either. Well, I rarely do, do I?

KG by Kurt Geiger ‘Esme’ studded platforms

000316403 KG by Kurt Geiger Esme studded platforms

Meet Kurt Geiger’s ‘Esme’. Esme is one of those shoes which lures you in with her soft beige and eggshell upper – so far, so very soothing – and hits you smack in the face with a bright yellow heel:

With studs on.

And OK, these shoes won’t actually smack you in the face: that would be really painful. The heels are a little bit unexpected, though, and although I do like them, my natural aversion to anything neon tells me that I’d have liked them even more without the yellow.

That’s just me, though, and I’m not sure the bright colour would put me off, were they to magically appear on my shoe shelves, say.

What do you think of them?

LK Bennett ‘Romance’ coral ribbon sandals

I don’t know about you, but I tend to think of LK Bennett as a very understated kind of brand: their shoes are beautiful and elegant, true, but they’re not often what you’d call “exciting” – or, at least, not until now.

These coral and silver ‘Romance’ sandals are the kind of shoes that instantly made me go wow… and start feverishly dreaming up excuses to wear them. I’m still drawing a blank with that for the time being, but if you’re not, you need to know that they’re also available in black…

…and that they’re £245.

A|Wear Laura Dolly peep toe platform Mary Janes

You may be experiencing a slight sense of Shoe Deja Vu right now. Don’t worry: if you sit down and take a few deep breaths it will pass, as you realise that, yup, it’s another Miu Miu-inspired peep toe with that distinctive flared heel.

These ones are from A|Wear, which means that they’re definitely a lot more affordable than the designer versions, at £45. They come in bright red and blush-pink patent – two colours guaranteed to give me a headache as I try to decide which pair to go for – and you can click here to buy them.

Schuh ‘Cherry Pie’ ankle strap polka dot sandals

Well, these are just as sweet as cherry pie, aren’t they? And there was obviously no possible way for me to avoid saying that, once I’d read the name of them: sorry.

These are the latest offerings in my continuing quest to bring you shoes that don’t have skyscarper heels: these come in at 3.5″, which isn’t exactly “low”, either, but is still a good bit shorter than the 5″ platforms we see so much up, and isn’t it nice to see a cute design applied to a lower heel?

I , of course, like the polka dots, and I also like the little berry decoration on the toe (Which looks more like a blackberry than a cherry to me, but hey, let’s not pick hairs. Or even fruit.), which is something a little bit different.

They look nice on, too:

Blue stripe bow sandals from River Island

river island blue stripe bow sandals Blue stripe bow sandals from River Island

OK, I think I’m just going to have to re-name myself “Striperwoman” here. Is that OK with everyone?

Look, it’s not really my fault. Well, OK, it IS my fault. But am I slightly less to blame than I usually am for showing you lots of pairs of stripey shoes. You see, fashion seems to be going through one of those stages at the moment where it has aligned perfectly with my own personal tastes. The stores are just FULL of stripes, polka dots and the colour green. It is TORTURE for me, seriously. I mean, I know stripes and polka dots are always around in some form or another, and green has been quite prevalent too over the past couple of seasons, but at the moment I feel like I can’t visit a retail website without adding about 10 more items to my Wish List: or to my “To Be Blogged” list at the very least.

Which brings me to these River Island sandals. They have stripes. They have a bow. I wish they didn’t have a raffia platform, but they do, and I will live with it. They have a red twin, which…

red print bow sandals Blue stripe bow sandals from River Island…I really don’t like at all, actually.

The blue version, however: the blue version I would happily wear, even although there’s a good chance they’d made my ankles look like tree trunks. I think I’ll put that theory to the test next time I’m in River Island…

If you want to put it to the test RIGHT NOW, however, they’re £65, and you can click here to buy them.

And just in case you don’t believe me that fashion is deliberately trying to taunt me right now:
