Heroes or Villains? Flatforms

The “flatform” has been being touted as one of this summer’s biggest shoe trends for a while now, so I figured it was time to find out what you all think of them.

As the name suggests, the “flatform” is exactly what it sounds like: a platform sole… that’s flat. The ones pictured above are by Derek Lam (Click here to buy them from Saks), but there are quite a few examples of the style floating around right now, and you can expect to see many more of them as summer progresses.

I’m just going to be completely honest here: I absolutely hate the flatform. (And the word, come to think of it.) Honestly? I think they make your feet look like boats, and by “your feet” I mean “everyone’s feet” – yes, even you over there with the tiny size twos.

But of course, that’s just me, and if you think you can rock these, then more power to you!  What do you think of them, though? Will you be joining the flatform revolution?

    • I fought so hard with my mother to be allowed a pair of platforms like that when I was a teen. Looking back, I’m not sure what the appeal was.

    • they really do! however there was something more acceptable about a flatform in a almost cartoon character outfit that the spice girls were wearing, i say this in the most loving of ways!! x

    • Took the words out of my mouth….I actually gasped out loud and said, “Oh my LORD, those are HIDEOUS” in the silence of my room. Seriously…would people actually wear those?!

    • I completely agree.
We already had this kind of style about 15 years ago, and it was already ugly back than.
      No, thank you!

  • I kinda don’t see the point in them. If you want height then wear a wedge otherwise you might as well just wear flats- flat flats that is, not with the horrid platform thing.

  • I don’t mind how they look without feet in them…but on the feet they look a bit suspect. Plus, those who say they’re easy to walk in are lying-they’re so clompy and clumsy-feeling!

  • Being 5’3” I would normally say I need all the help I can get in the stature department. Unfortunately I draw the line at these. Totally not what was meant by 90s nostalgia- they look like little boats. Wrong!

  • ‘hideous’ is the first word that cones to mind, but I haven’t actually seen anyone wearing them. Maybe they’re the kind of shoes that look better on?

  • Urk! They’re seriously ugly, this is one of the worst examples at being “quirky” that I’ve ever seen.

  • Ugh! Flatforms are so ugly and look really uncomfortable, I just don’t understand how anybody would wear them…. And these shoes could have been so pretty without the platform!!

  • Now, see i was a little girl in the 90’s and i *WANTED* a pair of sparkly platform shoes… wanted wanted WANTED. And then I grew up, and had my toe reconstructed, and my knee reconstructed, and platforms came in. And I want a pair of sparkly platform shoes. I can only wear flat shoes: thus… if there were a pair of cheap pretty flatform(ugly word) out i would definitely buy them, especially if they had underbeveling to make them a little less chunky – more like geta. Although I am 172cm so I probably shouldn’t wear them…

    • I feel your pain. I have messed up feet and can only wear flats, but I don’t think that I would go as far as flatforms. Blegh.

  • See, I kind of love these shoes. I like the height, and I hate having a lift of 3+ inches like most platform sandals have. If they lowered the front 1/2 inch, so they weren’t SO flat, I would buy them in every color. I’ve tried on shoes like this, that were a bit lower in the front, and the bit where the toe lifts off the ground in the front seems to remove the “boat” look. On my feet, anyway. They need to come up with a name for them so I can do a successful internet search.

  • Villains! They may be platforms but somehow they just look so FLAT… like they got run over by a steamroller.

  • I like the white ones, but I’m also a fan of rocking horse shoes like Vivienne Westwood’s. These ones look like they might be more difficult to walk in, since they’re foam & don’t have the cut-out section at the back.

  • In all honesty I’ve never walked in these shoes before, but I’m in love with the idea of wearing them. I hate heels and bendy shoes because they put your feet in really awkward positions and hurt after walking in them for a bit. With flatforms your feet are straight and normal not getting crushed with all your weight going to your tip toes. Plus heels break, these DEFINITELY won’t. I do agree though that the height should be below 3in preferably at 1 and a half inches. But that’s just me…
