Category Archives: FlatsPeach lace ballerina flats from TopshopTopshop have been doing some lovely things with lace recently, and these ballet flats are one of the results of that. These don’t look even remotely practical to me, but I absolutely love the delicacy of the style, with the pretty lace uppers topped with a gauzy bow – so feminine! Sadly, these would only really work as slippers where I live, which makes the £75 price tag seem pretty steep (in fact, I was certain it was a mistake at first!), but if that’s just fine by you, you can click here to buy them. There’s a black version, too… Most wanted from our sponsorsJewel embellished ballet flats from Dorothy PerkinsPartial though I am to a shoe with a big ol’ lump of something sparkly on the toe, it was actually the colour of the uppers on these Dorothy Perkins ballet flats that drew me to them. That soft teal and bright purple make me think of candy, and Springtime, and other, happy things, and the brooches on the toes also give them a slightly decadent feel. All of those things are plus-points as far as I’m concerned, and here’s another one: they’re only £23 each. I’m very tempted to add a pair to my wish list: I just need to decide which colour I like best! Click here to order them from Dorothy Perkins.

Cute ballet flats from Oasis
All of the styles shown above are £40 or under, and all come with some kind of extravagant toe embellishment, be it diamante, triple bows or zip-trimmed flowers, and as I scrolled through the website, I kept finding myself thinking, “I like these best. No, these! No! Has to be these!” I still haven’t decided which I like best: if you can, or if you just want to see what else is on offer, take a look at the Oasis website. Manolo Blahnik jewelled satin skimmers: Carrie’s wedding shoes, but flat!Remember the bright blue Manolos which Mr Big used to propose to Carrie, and which she wore at her wedding? They were called ‘Hagisi’, and if the heels on them were too high for your liking, well, here’s the flat version, available in that same blue satin (and also in black), and retailing for $945 at Neiman Marcus. Now, that’s about $900 more than I’d generally consider paying for a pair of flat pumps, even an “iconic” style that comes with a crystal brooch on the toe – in fact, I think I’d probably want that brooch to be made from diamonds for that price – but what do you think of these? ‘I Love You’ ballet flats from Topshop
Well, I think shoes with writing on them are always rather hit-or-miss, and for me, they usually end up being a “miss”. With that said, something about these ones appeals to me: I like the pale yellow uppers, and they do make a change from the usual, very simple ballet pumps we see so much of. What do you think of them? They’re £18 at Topshop. Do you love them back? Topshop try to make “sensible” shoes fashionableI swear to God, I had these exact shoes in primary school. In fact, everyone I knew had them. I didn’t choose them for myself, I hasten to add. They were chosen by my parents as the “practical” choice of shoe to wear with my school uniform, and man, but I hated those shoes. They were everything my much-younger self didn’t want to wear (I used to dream of the day my feet would grow to size 3, because in my innocence I believed that ALL shoes of that size and above were high heels, and that my parents would therefore have no choice but to either let me wear them, or force me to go barefoot*), and as far as I was concerned, they were the absolute antithesis of “style”. I still see schoolgirls walking around Edinburgh wearing the same kind of shoes now, and I’d imagine they hate them every bit as much as I did. Or maybe not. Because these shoes don’t come from some “sensible” shoe shop, the type your mother would drag you into, kicking and screaming, as a child. No, they come from Topshop, the UK’s foremost fashion chain, famed for its runway-influenced, designer-led clothing. This makes me want to cry. Are sensible shoes becoming fashionable? Are we making a return to schoolgirl style, possibly with pleated tartan skirts and chunky blazers to compliment the tasseled loafres? It would seem so. And don’t get me wrong: I’m all for comfort. (Well, kinda.) I get that not everyone wants to (or is able to) wear heels, and that sometimes flats have to be the order of the day. I just don’t think I’m going to be able to reconcile myself to wearing the same shoes as an adult that I wore as an 11-year-old. What about you, though? Assuming you don’t have those horrible “school shoe” associations, what do you think of these? And how would you wear them? (They’re £5o at Topshop, if you want to buy them, by the way.) * My parents would have gone with the “barefoot” option. I know it. Vionnet spike and crystal-embellished flatsAs soon as I saw the words “spike” and “crystal” together in the same product description, I knew these shoes would have to appear on Shoeperwoman.com. Well, it’s not often you find a pair of flat sandals that are covered in spikes, is it? Or that cost $1,280, come to think of it… These are by Vionnet, and while I wouldn’t wear them myself, it’s always nice to see someone try to do something a little different with this style, which can look a little frumpy at times. I don’t think anyone could accuse these particular shoes of frumpiness, though, and I recommend taking a look at them on the Net-a-Porter website, so you can zoom in and get a closer look at the detail. Here’s the side view, meanwhile:

Red and white bow ballet flats from NextI don’t often shop from Next’s clothing collections, but I must admit, they have a rather nice line in ballet flats, with everything from jewelled Miu-Miu-esque party flats to these simple but chic little flexible ballerinas, which come complete with a striped bow threaded through the front. These are available in red and white/blue, and I’d be hard pressed to choose between them, because the colours are just perfect for summer. The white shoes have a lovely, fresh look about them, while the red versions are a little bit sassier. Both are £28, and you can choose your colour here. | |||||||
