Red canvas ballerina pumps from Accessorize

When it comes to packing for summer holidays, I always try to do the whole “capsule wardrobe” thing. I always fail miserably at this, and end up having to wear all my clothes on the way home because I’ve packed so much – and bought so much – that I’m waaaay over my luggage, but at least the thought is there.

Because of my well-documented love of the nautical look, my chosen colours for this so-called “capsule” wardrobe of mine are always red, blue and white. (And, er, green. Also: black.) Which is why these Accessorize shoes went onto my summer wish list as soon as I laid eyes on them. Not only will they fit in perfectly with the rest of the wardrobe, they’re also as light as only a pair of canvas flats can be, AND they’re only £20.

Now I just need to find room for all of the 20 million other items I want to try and fit into my suitcase…

Yes, readers, it’s your regularly scheduled heart-shaped-shoe of the week! (OK, so they’re not actually heart-shaped. That would be weird. But… oh, you know what I mean.)

I can’t quite give you ten things I love about these shoes, but I can give you four:

1. The name. Oh, come on, you’ve got to love a company who names their shoe ‘10 Things I Love About Shoe’!

2. The heart. Well, d’uh!

3. The comic-book look of said heart. Well, I’m a cartoon superhero, of course I’m going to like that!

4. The price: $54.99 at Modcloth.

Oh, come on, you didn’t think I’d let a whole week go by without showing you at least one pair of heart-embellished shoes, did you?

Actually, that’s what I was planning to do, but then these little patent flats popped up at Accessorize, and I just couldn’t resit showing you them. They’re only £22, and just the thing for summer days, when you can slip them on with shorts, dresses, jeans: you name it. Super-cute, and super-affordable, you can grab yourself a pair here here.

Olivia Wilde at the 2010 Grammy Awards

You could be forgiven, sometimes, for thinking that the dress code for most red carpet events reads “must wear very high heels”, so it makes a nice change to see someone flouting that convention, and turning up in a pair of flats. Olivia Fox chose these metallic flats to wear with her pale green dress at last night’s Grammy Awards. She looks very fresh and pretty here, although in contrast to some of the other outfits on show last night, she actually managed to look rather casual in comparison.

What do you think of this as a red carpet look?

Chloe Capretto white leather ballerina flats

I can’t say ballet flats are something I tend to be willing to spend a lot of money on. As pretty as they can be, the fact that the entire sole is in constant contact with the ground means I’m much harder on them than I am on shoes with heels, so they wear out much faster in my hands (or on my feet, rather) than other styles do. And I can’t say white ballet flats are normally high on my wish list, either: I almost always go for silver, gold or, er, leopard print when I’m buying this style of shoe, purely because they’re so versatile. (OK, maybe not the leopard print…)

With all of that said, though, these Chloe flats are really pretty, with their little chain-edged flower embellishments. Are they $495 worth of pretty? Not to me, I don’t think, but if they’re worth that much to you, you can buy them at Net-a-Porter.

I’ve never liked flat lace-ups. They have that masculine kind of look to them (or maybe it’s just the memory of too many pairs of “sensible” school shoes!) that can look fantastic on some people, but is just all wrong for me, so they’re a style I’ve always avoided. I know lots of you love this look, though, and it’s one we’ve been seeing a lot of over the past few months, and will no doubt see even more of in the next few.

ASOS have tried to make these ‘Magnolia’ flats a little more feminine with the addition of the all-over ditsy print. Does the clash of masculine and feminine work here, though? I’m going to let you be the judge of that – I’m far to biased to provide an objective opinion on this one, but if you’re firmly in favour of these, they’re £28 at ASOS.com.

I seem to have made it my mission in life (or one of them, anyway) to show you every pair of heart-embellished shoes ever made, so today I’m dutifully reporting the existence of these ‘Becky’ flats by Lucky Brand.

The colour is described as “carrot”, which is a trifle unusual, but these look more tan than orange on my monitor, and I think they’d be perfect for a cute, casual look: the fact that the heart is the same colour as the rest of the shoe means it’s a little less “in your face” than some heart-fronted shoes I could mention.

Want to try them on? They’re $79 at Piperlime.

Red stripe ballerina pumps from Miss Selfridge

One day, this horrible weather is going to end, and the sun’s going to come back out. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but one day it will happen. And when that blessed day comes, I’m probably going to want to buy something a lot like these red stripe pumps from Miss Selfridge. Because, yes, I’m STILL obsessed with stripes. And because they’ll merge seamlessly with my warm-weather wardrobe, which consists almost exclusively of shades of blue, white and red.

Ah, but summer is still a long, long way away. Shame: these are only £15, too!

Over the Christmas period, the weather here was so bad that even I was forced to abandon my heels at times and go for more “sensible” footwear – shudder!

I’m not sure these French Connection flats count as “sensible” – they’re much too pretty for that – and they wouldn’t provide much in the way of grip, or protection from the snow, but they do make a nice alternative to a pair of party heels, and you’d have a better chance of remaining upright in them after a couple of glasses of champagne.

Best of all, now that the party season is over, they’re on sale! You can buy them at Kurt Geiger, where they’re £49.

khussa-shoes

The shape of these shoes is really similar to the Indian khussa shoes I used to wear constantly a few years ago. I used to buy them from eBay and wear them around the house as “slippers”, although I’d happily wear them outdoors on dry summer days, too. They’re comfortable, but still look stylish, and I absolutely loved them: I know a lot of people like to wear the silver, gold or white versions as wedding shoes, too.

Time passed, though, and the hundreds of pairs of khussas available slowly dwindled. I haven’t owned a pair for a few years now, but these versions of the style from River Island have reminded me to have a look for them. The pairs I used to buy came in all the colours of the rainbow, and with beautiful embroidery or sequins on them. These ones, meanwhile, come in silver or red – they’re £24.99 at River Island.
