Unusual Shoes at Net-a-Porter

A quick look at some of the more unusual shoes from the current selection at Net-a-Porter…

You can always rely on Nicholas Kirkwood to give us something interesting to look at: his shoes are anything but ordinary, and these ones use a chunkier twist on the iconic Kirkwood platform sole, to really dramatic effect. A gold trim completes the effect created by these sculptural shoes, which wouldn’t look out of place in an art gallery, let alone a shoe store.

As I quickly scrolled through the Net-a-Porter ‘New In’ section (one of my very favourite hobbies…), I initially thought this was some kind of very expensive, stylized roller skate. I quickly realised my mistake, but I still can’t quite shake the impress created by that circular heel! Just in case the heel wasn’t different enough for you, though, the long pointed toe, a croc-effect upper and a wrap around tie detail all compete for attention here: I’ve no idea how I’d style these, and I suspect I’d fail miserably at it, but I’d love to see someone else give it a go!

Now, I have to confess, these aren’t my taste at all: or, at least, the heel isn’t. The rest of the shoes is a classic Mary Jane pump – and a rather beautiful one too, with it’s silver upper and jewelled button clasp. I personally think the fussy heel ruins these, but it is, of course, the focal point of the entire design, and probably the main selling point too, for those who like this kind of style. I almost always prefer a heel to be as simple and streamlined as possible, though, so don’t mind me: what do YOU think of these shoes?
