How to Look Good in the Snow

how to look good in the snow

I should probably begin this post with a quick disclaimer, to say that if you think it’s going to be possible to achieve Audrey-Hepburn-esque levels of elegance in a few feet of snow, well, I’m guessing you’ve probably never actually experienced a few feet of snow.

The fact is that no one looks REALLY good in seriously bad weather: they just don’t. Snow might look pretty, but the kind of clothing you need to wear to spend any time in it generally aren’t, so it’s best to just come to terms with that fact first. With that said, there are some things you can do to look good in the snow – or as good as possible, anyway – and here they are:

WEAR THERMAL UNDERWEAR

No, it’s not even remotely sexy, but a set of decent thermals will be your style saviours in snowy weather. Why make yourself look like a walking duvet, when you can simply add some thin layers under your regular clothes, after all?

BUY SOME FLEECE-LINED TIGHTS

When your regular tights just won’t cut it, fleece-lined ones look exactly the same, but feel a whole lot warmer. I’m reliably informed that Primark do some great fleece-lined tights, but if you can’t find any, and are wearing boots (which you probably will be, if it’s snowing), a pair of thick leggings will also work, as will doubling-up your regular tights.

MAKE SURE YOUR COAT IS RIGHT FOR YOUR OUTFIT

If you live in a cold climate, you’ve probably amassed at least a small collection of winter coats. I’m sure you’ve all had the experience of putting together an outfit you’re happy, with, however, only to have it totally ruined by your outerwear. No matter how stylish your coat is, if it doesn’t work with your outfit, it’ll make you look like a badly-wrapped parcel, so next time you go coat-shopping, don’t just pick a coat you like the look of – think carefully about the type of outfits you’ll wear with it, and make sure your chosen coat will compliment them. For instance, I often wear midi-length skirts, which means I need to look for a coat long enough to cover them.

TAKE A LEAF OUT OF BLAIR WALDORF’S BOOK

Remember Gossip Girl’s Blair Waldorf, and her awesome outerwear? Blair’s secret to looking good in cold weather was that she treated her coats as outfits in themselves, rather than just viewing them as something to throw over the top of her look. She accessorized them with brooches, necklaces and bows and always looked amazing: take a leaf out of Blair’s book and get accessorizing!

DON’T TRY TOO HARD

Good style doesn’t mean wearing the fanciest outfit you can come up with, regardless of the circumstances: it’ s all about making sure your clothes are appropriate for the occasion, so when it comes to dressing for snowy weather, don’t try too hard to be ‘Best Dressed’. No one will think you look stylish if you’re ploughing through a snowdrift in strappy sandals and an evening gown – they’ll just think you look freezing, so dress for the weather first, and style second – keeping the tips above in mind.

DO YOU HAVE ANY TRIED-AND-TRUE WAYS TO LOOK GOOD IN THE SNOW?

  • Good tip on the outerwear – I never think of adding anything to my coats (although my main coat is a long, forties style coat with a fur collar, so I guess it doesn’t need much…), but adding a little something to an otherwise plain coat or jacket makes a lot of difference!
