Five Pairs of Shoes Worth Investing In

what-to-wear

I’m no shoe snob: and I’m no reverse shoe snob either – by which I mean I’m definitely not adverse to buying the odd pair of cheap-n-cheerful shoes, either to fill a gap in my closet, or just because I liked them.

There are some shoes, however, which I’m always prepared to pay a little more – or sometimes a lot more for. Here are the styles I personally think are worth investing in:

THE KNEE HIGH BOOTS THAT FIT LIKE A DREAM

I know I’m not alone in finding it almost impossible to find knee-high boots that are neither too loose nor too tight in the calf, so on the rare occasions when I do stumble across that holy grail of winter footwear, I’ll be willing to pay a bit more for the novelty of wearing boots that actually fit me for once. (And then I’ll pay even more to keep having them repaired, rather than starting the search for a new pair!)

THE SHOES YOU WEAR MOST OFTEN

I no longer work in an office, but when I did, I’d invest more in work shoes than I did in weekend wear, the logic being that those dull pumps were on my feet much more often than the fancy sandals and fun peep toes, so it was worth my while buying a pair that would last, be comfortable enough to wear, and not have to be replaced every few months. These days, I find myself most often turning to my nude patent pumps, which go with everything, and therefore get more wear than anything else on my shoe shelves: I paid more for them, for that very reason.

THE SHOES YOU WORK OUT IN

I  won’t lie: if it was up to me, I’d prefer not to spend ANY money at all on running shoes, but the fact is that if there’s one pair of shoes you just can’t afford to cheap out on, the shoes you work out in are that pair. It’s SO important to make sure workout shoes fit correctly and offer the appropriate support for the exercise you’ll be doing, and if the right pair for you happens to be on the pricey side, just keep reminding yourself that healthy feet will be worth the investment.

THE ‘CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT THEM’ SHOES

I’m sure most shoe lovers have had that moment where a pair of shoes stops you in your tracks and makes you gasp out loud. When that happens, I force myself to walk away… but if I find I can’t stop thinking about them, and realise that NOT buying them is probably going to end in me paying through the nose for them on eBay, because I didn’t buy them when I had the chance, it’s probably going to be worth the investment for me.*

(*Assuming I actually have the spare cash, that is: I don’t advocate starving for the sake of shoes!)

YOUR WEDDING SHOES

This one is debatable: there are some who see their wedding day as the perfect excuse to splurge on an amazing pair of shoes, while others believe it’s a waste of money to invest in shoes you (might) only wear once. I think both points of view are valid ones: when I got married, I was on a serious budget, and couldn’t afford to splurge on shoes, but if I was to do it all over again – and had some room in the budget – I’d probably go for a pair of sparkly Louboutins, in a colour and style I’d be able to wear again. Being the sentimental sort, I know I’d never toss out the shoes I got married in – so I might as well chose a pair I really, REALLY loved!

  • The “can’t live without them” heels and the heels I wear most often that fit like a dream seems to be my themes for the stiletto pumps in my wardrobe selections. Since I’m a guy in this social climate, my possible wedding heels are also among my choices.
