HOW TO STOP YOUR SHOES FROM SLIPPING OFF

Picture it: there you are, striding out the door on your way to work/school/whatever, when all of a sudden your foot hits concrete, and you realise you’ve stepped right out of your shoe – whoops! Or you’re walking along in what SHOULD be comfortable shoes, but you’re having to clench your toes constantly, to stop them sliding off your heels.

Sometimes this kind of shoe slippage is caused by tights (those shoes which were perfectly secure all summer, when you wore them with bare feet, are suddenly unwearable now that you’re wearing them with tights), and sometimes it happens regardless. Whatever the cause, it can be downright irritating – and sometimes even dangerous, if you’re constantly sending shoes flying – so here are some tips to stop shoes slipping off:

MAKE SURE YOUR SHOES FIT CORRECTLY

Always the first point in your plan of attack, before you try any of the tips below, make sure your shoes are the right size. If they’re slipping off because they’re too large (as opposed to because you’re wearing tights, or because they’re just plain slippy), then you need to consider switching them for shoes that fit, rather than continuing to try to walk in ill-fitting footwear.

TRY HEEL GRIPS

If heel slippage is caused by slippery tights, or shoes which lack grip at the heel, gel heel grips can really help. Try these.

OR TOE PADS

If the issue is caused by too much room at the toe, padding it out will push your foot back against the heel of the shoe, and stop it slipping. Again, it’s preferable to buy shoes that aren’t too roomy than padding out ones that are, but if you’re determined to make them work, toe pads are your friends. These ones are by Party Feet.

○  USE HAIRSPRAY ON THE SOLES OF YOUR FEET

Yes, really.

SECURE THE SHOES TO YOUR FEET WITH DOUBLE-SIDED TAPE

The ultimate in DIY shoe solutions.

AVOID FOOT LOTION

If you’re wearing your shoes with bare feet, avoid using lotion before you put the shoes on – it’ll just make your foot more slippery, and your shoes harder to keep anchored.

○ PUT TALC INSIDE YOUR SHOE

Another bare-foot tip: try a light dusting of talcum powder inside the shoe to absorb any sweat (sorry), and keep the shoe in place.

○ TRY SLIP-RESIST TIGHTS

Some tights come with special grips on the foot: these ones are from Marks & Spencer.

○ WEAR FOOTIE SOCKS OVER YOUR TIGHTS

This won’t work with all styles of shoes, but if yours have a high enough profile, and the slippage is being caused by tights, try wearing a pair of “footie” socks (the type that are designed to not be seen under your shoes) over the top: they’ll make the shoes fit a little more snugly, which should stop them slipping.

  • My tip is to use pure lambs wool in the toe of the shoe. It moulds to your foot, really works and is super-soft. And it’s also very cheap. It’s made by Carnation Footcare (sold as Animal Wool) and available from amazon. Ballet dancers use it.
    It’s genius!

    • A new product on the market since 2016 is a tiny insert in two parts that fits completely underfoot, is customizable to your foot length and stops your foot from sliding forward by having soft Poron cushions in front of the ball of foot and in front of the heel to hold the foot in place. It stops heel gaps too. It is made as both temporary and movable from shoe to shoe, or permanent. You can find it online by searcing for ‘permanent high heel inserts’ and find it under killer heels comfort

  • Thank you so much for posting about this ! I’ts a huge problem for me and now i never buy this kind of shoes anymore because i lose them all the time…

  • I had tried everything on the market nothing worked that well. Just had the opportunity to sample these things called shoestix. They worked, no I mean really worked. I have been using them for over a month, they are still going strong. My shoes just stay on. I have used them in heels, flats and even trainers after the trainers had caused a blister just thought I would put them in, stopped the trainer rubbing and hey presto I was able to wear the trainers even with the blister.

Not sure if you can get them yet, I hope they will be in the shops because they really are great. I know I will be tracking them down to get another pair when these wear out.

  • Lol, quite intresting, thought it was just me.Went in the store tried at least two pairs but my feet would not stay in, the guy said change the size,(still same effect)Had no choose needed this white one for mothers day, google it, hair spray, haha.

) I handle such info a lot. I used to be seeking this certain information for a very long time.
    Thank you and good luck.

  • I have ALWAYS worn HIGH heels. Last year I bought a MK pair that I love BUT my heel pops out no matter what grips I used. I wore heels for 12-14 hrs a day and did not have a problem. I’m a size 9 and my heels are a size 9. How do the actresses keep their heels on when it is said they wear heels 1x larger size they don’t blister?
