Heroes or Villains? Flatforms

derek lamb flatforms Heroes or Villains? Flatforms

The “flatform” has been being touted as one of this summer’s biggest shoe trends for a while now, so I figured it was time to find out what you all think of them.

As the name suggests, the “flatform” is exactly what it sounds like: a platform sole… that’s flat. The ones pictured above are by Derek Lam (Click here to buy them from Saks), but there are quite a few examples of the style floating around right now, and you can expect to see many more of them as summer progresses.

I’m just going to be completely honest here: I absolutely hate the flatform. (And the word, come to think of it.) Honestly? I think they make your feet look like boats, and by “your feet” I mean “everyone’s feet” – yes, even you over there with the tiny size twos.

But of course, that’s just me, and if you think you can rock these, then more power to you!  What do you think of them, though? Will you be joining the flatform revolution?

I hate them. I think they’re massively ugly as well as making your feet look like boats.

      Agreed!

Also agreed! Look like something out of the Mikado.

They’re hideous! They remind me of those ‘Spice Girl’ style shoes from the 90′s!

I fought so hard with my mother to be allowed a pair of platforms like that when I was a teen. Looking back, I’m not sure what the appeal was.

they really do! however there was something more acceptable about a flatform in a almost cartoon character outfit that the spice girls were wearing, i say this in the most loving of ways!! x

Took the words out of my mouth….I actually gasped out loud and said, “Oh my LORD, those are HIDEOUS” in the silence of my room. Seriously…would people actually wear those?!

      I completely agree.
We already had this kind of style about 15 years ago, and it was already ugly back than.
      No, thank you!

I kinda don’t see the point in them. If you want height then wear a wedge otherwise you might as well just wear flats- flat flats that is, not with the horrid platform thing.

Nooo no no no no no NO! They should be burned!

I don’t mind how they look without feet in them…but on the feet they look a bit suspect. Plus, those who say they’re easy to walk in are lying-they’re so clompy and clumsy-feeling!

HATE. I agree with Kelsey, they should be buuuuurned!

Before I even read the post, I reeled back from the picture crying ‘Boatfeet! Boatfeet!’

I’m agree with you; horrible name as ugly shoe…Are these made for walking? Really??

Being 5’3” I would normally say I need all the help I can get in the stature department. Unfortunately I draw the line at these. Totally not what was meant by 90s nostalgia- they look like little boats. Wrong!

if you want height why no wear a heel instead of standing on a block of wood?

  13. Sara

    March 9, 2011

‘hideous’ is the first word that cones to mind, but I haven’t actually seen anyone wearing them. Maybe they’re the kind of shoes that look better on?

Ha Ha, everyone hates them…me I love them! But then I always like things other people hate! Never mind! :D

    March 10, 2011

Urk! They’re seriously ugly, this is one of the worst examples at being “quirky” that I’ve ever seen.

Can you say “Tom Cruise and stacked heels”? Yuck.

Ugh! Flatforms are so ugly and look really uncomfortable, I just don’t understand how anybody would wear them…. And these shoes could have been so pretty without the platform!!

  20. Mair

    March 11, 2011

Here’s a picture of them actually being worn:

so it’s definitely not a case of looking nicer on an actual foot. Ick!

As a really really short person, I get the logic. Sadly, logic rarely equals nice shoes.

Now, see i was a little girl in the 90′s and i *WANTED* a pair of sparkly platform shoes… wanted wanted WANTED. And then I grew up, and had my toe reconstructed, and my knee reconstructed, and platforms came in. And I want a pair of sparkly platform shoes. I can only wear flat shoes: thus… if there were a pair of cheap pretty flatform(ugly word) out i would definitely buy them, especially if they had underbeveling to make them a little less chunky – more like geta. Although I am 172cm so I probably shouldn’t wear them…

      March 12, 2011

I feel your pain. I have messed up feet and can only wear flats, but I don’t think that I would go as far as flatforms. Blegh.

  23. Tricia

    March 11, 2011

See, I kind of love these shoes. I like the height, and I hate having a lift of 3+ inches like most platform sandals have. If they lowered the front 1/2 inch, so they weren’t SO flat, I would buy them in every color. I’ve tried on shoes like this, that were a bit lower in the front, and the bit where the toe lifts off the ground in the front seems to remove the “boat” look. On my feet, anyway. They need to come up with a name for them so I can do a successful internet search.

    March 12, 2011

Villains! They may be platforms but somehow they just look so FLAT… like they got run over by a steamroller.

  25. Tor

    March 12, 2011

I like the white ones, but I’m also a fan of rocking horse shoes like Vivienne Westwood’s. These ones look like they might be more difficult to walk in, since they’re foam & don’t have the cut-out section at the back.

Seconding Tor. I’m a huge enormous really big fan of Vivienne Westwood RHS.

Love them! No logical reason, I just do. Wore similar shoes in the 90′s and they were comfortable plus gave height. :)
