Lotus Hallmark Piston open toe Mary Janes take us back to the 80s

lotus hallmarkshoes Lotus Hallmark Piston open toe Mary Janes take us back to the 80s

These shoes definitely won’t be to everyone’s taste, but if you’re a fan of 80s fashion (and I’m sure someone must be, or why else would the stores all be chock full of neon and acid wash at the moment?), few shoe-makers do it better than Lotus Hallmark.

These ‘Piston’ Mary Janes are 80s-tastic indeed, but you could easily wear them without looking like a throwback to the decade that fashion forgot: just avoid the aforementioned neon and acid wash and you’ll be fine. And if you still hate them, don’t worry – another decade must be due for a fashion revival soon. Surely?

BUY: Lotus Hallmark ‘Piston’ Mary Janes, £85

Ugly Shoe of the Day: Zaha Hadid for Lacoste’s plastic shoe, er, thingies

6a00d8341c873353ef011570a75a74970b 800wi Ugly Shoe of the Day: Zaha Hadid for Lacostes plastic shoe, er, thingiesAs anyone who knows me will tell you, my arch nemesis is none other than the Croc. I hate Crocs with a fiery passion, and unless you’re wearing them as gardening shoes or for some other, purely practical reason (I know some people with foot problems find them to be the only shoes they can wear, for instance, and obviously no one’s going to blame them for that), I can see no good side to them. At all. Sure, I’ve heard all of the “but they’re SO! COMFY!” arguments, but here’s the thing: I don’t care.  Because LOTS of shoes are “comfy”, without looking like something the garden gnome just kicked off. Also: I actually tried a pair of Crocs on once, out of sheer curiosity, and let me tell you, I’ve worn comfier shoes.

But anyway. This post actually has nothing to do with my mortal enemy, Crocs, other than that I suspect these shoes, by Zaha Hadid for Lacoste, may be a close relation of them. They’re also made of plastic, but while they lack the clumpy, gnome-shoe look of Crocs, they more than make up for it with that strange, winding plastic strap that snakes up the leg.

What’s that about, then? Can you even IMAGINE how sweaty and uncomfortable that thing would be in warm weather? Or how ridiculous these would look on?

The Fashion Police arrested these shoes earlier today, and have asked me to use my superpowers to cast them into space. I’m only too happy to oblige, but if you love these, I’m afraid you’ll have to wait until July, when they’ll be available from selected outlets. As someone comments at the Fashion Police, “just in time for the hot weather!”

Jimmy Choo Loop patent leather sandals in orange and black

jimmy choo loop sandals Jimmy Choo Loop patent leather sandals in orange and black

I’ve always thought of Jimmy Choo as a brand that’s more “classic” than it is “edgy”, but with these ‘Loop’ patent sandals they seem to have ventured a little further outside their usual remit, with a vaguely gladiatorial style stiletto sandal in bright orange and black.

So, what do we make of these, then? At first glance I wasn’t convinced, with the black ankle cuffs putting me off. The more I look at them, though, and appreciate the slender stiletto and delicate shape of the shoe, the more I think these could actually be rather stunning on. I think the proof would be in the wearing here, and I’d need to see them on an actual foot to know for sure what I think of them. If you know you love them now, though, they’re £450 from Net-a-Porter.

BUY: Jimmy Choo Loop patent sandals, £450

If, however, you’re a fan of my arch rival, these are by Havaianas, and you can buy them for $35 from Piperlime. I promise I won’t hold it against you. Much.

Heroes or Villains? Unicorn Princess heels from Modcloth

unicorn princess Heroes or Villains? Unicorn Princess heels from ModclothHmmm. The words “unicorn” and “princess” in the name of these shoes certainly appeals to the part of me that’s secretly still only 6 years old, and dreaming of being a Disney princess when she grows up. And the nude colour works for me too, obviously. (See: nude shoes, my current obsession with) As for the rest, though, I’m not so sure. The unicorn horn heel, and ruffles around the ankle definitely make these shoes stand out, but do they stand out for good reasons or for bad ones?

I’m going to let you be the judge of that. If you love them, though, but them now for $119 at Modcloth.

Cream ribbon detail court shoes by Red Herring at Debenhams

red herring shoes Cream ribbon detail court shoes by Red Herring at DebenhamsThis is another pair of shoes that look better in real life than they do in the picture. I tried on these cream ribbon courts shoes by Red Herring a few weeks ago, and was very tempted to buy them: I’ve been increasingly impressed by the offerings from Debenhams’ Red Herring label – the prices are pretty reasonable (these are £32), but the shoes can be very cute, and I think these definitely fit into the “cute” category.

I’m a bit of a fan of cream coloured shoes anyway, because, like their nude coloured brothers and sisters, there are very few colours they don’t work with. These ones would be perfect for a special occasion like a wedding or something, but I’d also be tempted to wear them for everyday use during the summer – well, no point keeping them in the closet, is there?

BUY: Red Herring cream ribbon court shoes, £32

new look studded courts Shoe Shopping with Shoeperwoman: Black suede studded platforms from New Look

I apologise in advance to anyone who really likes these shoes. These, you see, are  yet another example of The Ones That Got Away.

I spotted these on the New Look website a while back, you see, and although I liked them, I didn’t think they were “all that”. Then I spotted them in the store this weekend and realised that, actually? These shoes ARE all that – and a little bit more into the bargain. The suede is soft, the studs add a bit of interest, the shape of the heel is – and I’m sorry to say this, but there’s really no other word for it – fierce. They are, in fact, exactly the kind of black court shoe I’ve been looking for for months now.

So what’s the problem, I hear you ask?

Well, they only had two pairs left. And they were both size 3. I wear a size 4. Gah.

I did, naturally, try to cram my feet into the size 3s, Ugly Sister-style (hence the photos above), but even I was forced to concede that it just wasn’t going to work. I was not going to the ball. Sigh.

When I got home, I had a quick look on the website again, but of course, the shoes are sold out in the black suede, although they are still available in gold and bronze. (These colours look nicer, and less shiny, in real life than they do on the website, but it was the suede that stole my heart.)

They’re just £25, and you can buy them here.
